If you’re okay with an extra night in Joshimath, staying at Faraway Cottages gives you a quick 4 km trek to Chopta and a short drive to the Valley of Flowers. From Rishikesh you can catch a bus to Ukhimath and then a local shared taxi to Tungnath; the taxi leaves around 10 am and the ride takes about two hours. This keeps transport simple and lets you focus on the temples.

Since you’ll be arriving at Nako around 4 p.m., you could stay at Hotel Kalpa Deshang and catch a taxi to the monastery around 5 p.m. That way you’ll be back in the village before sunset and still have a comfortable room. If you prefer a quieter night and don’t mind the longer trek, Zostel Sangla is a solid budget option, and the flat 60 km path can be walked or biked if you’re up for it. Which timing works best for you?

You could start at the main ghat around sunset, then hop on a short boat ride that takes you past the Brahma Temple and the Jwalamalini shrine. From there a quick walk or auto to the nearby Pushkar Lake lets you see the lotus filled water and the temple’s evening chants without backtracking. If you want a place to sit and watch the lights, the pavilion near the ghat is free and offers a good view.

If you’re staying at the Royale Lalawi Hotel, the walk to the museum takes about fifteen minutes and the trailhead for Durtlang is just a short jog from there. The hotel’s terrace also gives a nice city view, so you can catch the sunrise before heading out and then head back for a quick tea stop near the museum.

You could also grab a quick snack at the small café on Lodhi Road right after your walk. It’s just a short stroll from The Claridges New Delhi and offers light pastries and tea that are budget friendly. Have you tried the tea there?

You could add a quick stop at the small colonial church that sits just outside the main gate it’s free and its simple nave gives a clear feel of the period. From there, walk a mile to the old fort walls and note the stone lintels that were reused in later colonial structures. If you stay overnight at Samanvay Boutique Hotel, you can catch an early 22A bus and avoid the midday crowd. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

The best spot after sunset is the main gate where the lanterns flare up and the old stone walls glow. From there you can walk down the eastern rampart and watch the city lights spread across the plains. If you’re looking for a place to stay, Townhouse OAK Hotel C Pearls in Bahadurgarh is just over seven kilometres away and offers a quick drop off from the fort.

If you’re heading straight out of the airport, there’s a small dhaba just outside the parking that serves a quick tandoori roti with a side of dahi ki chutney it’s a staple in Uttar Pradesh and only a few minutes walk from the terminal.

You can also park a small vehicle at the fort’s entrance; the parking lot is free and can hold a few cars, so if you drive you’ll have a convenient spot before heading up. After the climb, the same NH 65 stretch that takes you to the Prakasam Barrage also runs past the Undavalli Caves, so a single drive can hit all three sites in one day.

If you’re already at the station a quick cab is probably the fastest way in, but the minibus from the bus stand runs every 15 20 minutes and only takes about ten minutes. Either way you can get to the Gurdwara in under ten minutes, then walk the two kilometres to the fort or hop on a rickshaw. That gives you plenty of daylight to finish both spots before dark.

A good spot to stop before the fort is the Gurudwara Sri Guru Ram Das Sahib right next to the railway station; it’s a quick walk and gives a nice view of the town’s layout. From the station you can take a short taxi or a local bus that heads straight to the fort it’s about a 5 minute ride. The fort’s ramparts are great for panoramic shots of the surrounding fields, and the old watchtowers still stand, so spend a bit of time exploring those. If you have time, a quick walk around the nearby Ramgarhia Bagh park offers a quiet place to rest before heading back.

If you’re heading early morning, the first mini bus from Dehradun Bus Stand leaves around 5:30 am and stops at Kali Temple. It runs roughly every 15 minutes during the day. The fare stays in the low single digit rupee range, so you’ll save both time and money compared to a train plus local bus combo. If you’re staying near the temple, Vatsyayana A Himalayan Boutique Resort is a convenient spot to drop off your luggage.

If you’re staying at the Jai Mahal Palace, you could aim for a late afternoon slot around 3 pm on a Tuesday. That’s before the Sunday surge and still gives you a chance to catch the evening lights without the peak crowds.

You could also hop on a local taxi from the temple to Sabarmati Ashram for under ₹50. From the ashram, a quick auto rickshaw ride takes you straight to Kankaria Lake; the lake entry is free and you can walk the perimeter for a relaxed stroll. If you need a place to stay nearby, the Lemon Tree Hotel Rajkot is a budget option a few kilometres away.

If you want a sunset spot that’s a bit farther out, head to Papanasam after a quick swim at Varkala Beach. The sand there is finer and the crowd thins earlier, so you can catch the sun dipping behind the cliffs around 6:30 pm. Staying at Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff puts you a kilometre from the tunnel and gives easy access to both beaches.
