What family-friendly activities are around Varkala Tunnel?

Rehan Kaur · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a family trip to Varkala and need ideas for things to do near the Varkala Tunnel. The tunnel is free to enter and open all day, and it links Varkala Beach to Papanasam Beach. Would walking through the tunnel and then heading to the nearby beaches make a good plan for us?

The tunnel walk is a quick 15 minute stroll and gives a nice view of the cliffs. After that you can hit Varkala Beach for a relaxed afternoon and then head to Papanasam Beach, which is a bit quieter and good for sunset. If you want a comfortable base nearby, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is only about a kilometer from the tunnel and offers easy beach access.

You could start with the tunnel walk, then grab a quick bite at a beachside café there’s one right on Varkala Beach that serves fresh coconut water and small plates. After that, a short drive to Papanasam Beach is worth it for a quieter sunset spot. If you want a comfortable base close to both beaches, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is less than a kilometre from the tunnel and gives easy beach access.

You could start with the tunnel walk, then head straight to Varkala Beach for lunch at one of the stalls on the promenade. After a quick dip, a short 10 minute walk takes you to Papanasam Beach, where the sand is finer and the sunset is less crowded. If you want a convenient base that’s just under a kilometre from the tunnel, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff offers easy beach access. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could walk the tunnel, then spend a few hours at Varkala Beach for lunch and a swim, and finish with a sunset at Papanasam. If you want a base close to both spots, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is less than a kilometre from the tunnel and has easy beach access. It also offers a nice terrace for watching the waves.

You might also want to stop at the small beachside stall right after the tunnel; they sell fresh coconut water and a few quick snacks that keep the kids energized before heading to Papanasam.

The tunnel is only about a kilometre from Varkala Beach and about 1.5 km from Papanasam Beach, so you can walk or take a short auto rickshaw hop between the two. If you want a base that’s close to both spots, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff sits just under a kilometre from the tunnel and gives you easy beach access. It’s a good spot for a family stay.

If you’re looking for a quick way to stretch your legs after the tunnel, a short bike ride to Varkala Beach gives a nice cliff view along the path. From there you can walk a few minutes to Papanasam Beach, which tends to be less crowded at sunset.

If you’re staying near the tunnel, Sajjoys is about a kilometre away and has a nice terrace overlooking the beach. You could walk the tunnel, grab a quick snack at the stall right after, then head to Varkala Beach for lunch and a swim before strolling to the quieter Papanasam Beach for sunset. The whole loop takes under an hour each way, so it fits nicely into a relaxed day.

If you want a sunset spot that’s a bit farther out, head to Papanasam after a quick swim at Varkala Beach. The sand there is finer and the crowd thins earlier, so you can catch the sun dipping behind the cliffs around 6:30 pm. Staying at Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff puts you a kilometre from the tunnel and gives easy access to both beaches.
