Budget Tips for Visiting Agumbe’s Historical Sites

Varun Modi · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m a history buff looking to explore Agumbe’s past on a tight budget. The village is free to enter and open all day, so that’s a good start. I’d like to know how to make the most of the colonial and Vijayanagara heritage without overspending. Also, what’s the cheapest way to get to Agumbe from Udupi or Shimoga?

If you’re coming from Udupi, the state bus service runs a number of 22A or 22B buses that drop you near the Agumbe entrance. They’re cheap and run throughout the day. From Shimoga, take the KSRTC 69A or 69B; the journey is a bit longer but still very budget friendly. Both routes stop right outside the village, so you can hop off and start exploring the colonial and Vijayanagara ruins without extra travel costs.

A quick walk from the village centre takes you past the old Agumbe fort walls that date back to the Vijayanagara period. The stone pillars inside the ruins are a good visual cue for the era. If you’re tight on cash, just bring a notebook and sketch the carvings it’s free and gives a deeper sense of the history. Also, consider staying at a budget place in Udupi, like the Samanvay Boutique Hotel, then catch the 22A bus early to avoid the later crowds. What time do you plan to leave from Udupi?

A good tip is to visit the village gate early, around sunrise, when the light makes the Vijayanagara stone carvings clearer and the crowd is thin. Ask the local guide at the gate for a quick walk through of the old fort walls it’s free and often they point out lesser known spots. After that, grab a coffee at the small shop near the entrance; it’s inexpensive and gives you a taste of the local flavor before heading back to Udupi.

You could start at the village gate around sunrise to catch the light on the Vijayanagara stone carvings before the crowd arrives. A local guide often walks you through the old fort walls for free. Afterward, grab a cheap cup of coffee at the small shop near the entrance. If you need a place to stay nearby, the Samanvay Boutique Hotel in Udupi is a budget option and close to the bus stop.

You could also walk from the village gate to the old fort walls and spot the Vijayanagara stone pillars that line the path. The guide at the gate often points out lesser known carvings for free. If you need a cheap place to stay before heading back to Udupi, the Samanvay Boutique Hotel is a good budget option right near the bus stop.

Since the colonial ruins are scattered around the village, a quick walk from the main gate to the old fort walls gives you most of the highlights. If you want a bit more context, ask the guide at the gate for a free 10 minute tour they often spot lesser known carvings. Staying a night at the Samanvay Boutique Hotel in Udupi lets you catch an early 22A bus and avoid crowds the next day.

If you’re staying in Udupi, the Samanvay Boutique Hotel is a cheap base and sits right by the 22A stop. From there you can hop on early and walk the 2 km trail to the old fort walls; the local guide at the gate often shares extra carvings for free. After the walk, grab a simple cup of coffee from the shop near the entrance before heading back.

You could add a quick stop at the small colonial church that sits just outside the main gate it’s free and its simple nave gives a clear feel of the period. From there, walk a mile to the old fort walls and note the stone lintels that were reused in later colonial structures. If you stay overnight at Samanvay Boutique Hotel, you can catch an early 22A bus and avoid the midday crowd. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

A quick walk from the main gate to the old fort walls takes you past the Vijayanagara stone pillars and the colonial church just outside the gate, both free to view. If you’re leaving Udupi, hop on the early 22A KSRTC bus that drops you right outside the village gate just a few minutes into the ride and you’re already in Agumbe. From Shimoga, the 69A or 69B bus is the same low cost option; just catch it near the town bus stand and it will bring you directly to the village entrance. Both services run several times a day, so you can pick a slot that fits your schedule without breaking the bank.
