How to get a family to Ramukhrai Sacred Forest from Shillong Airport?

Chinmay Prasad · 15 hours ago ·6 replies

The forest is free to enter and stays open all day, which is good for a family looking for a relaxed outing. From Shillong Airport, the nearest bus stop is Ramukhrai Bus Stop, and cab services are easily available from nearby towns. The drive takes about an hour and covers roughly 20-25 km. I’m wondering if a family would prefer a private taxi or a shared bus for the trip, and how long the journey usually takes on a weekday versus a weekend. Also, is it better to leave early in the morning to avoid traffic or can we head out later in the day?

If you’re heading out on a weekday it’s usually quicker to take a private taxi; the roads are less congested and you can leave right after the airport opens around 8 am. On weekends the bus can get a bit slower, especially after 10 am, so an early departure helps avoid the peak. If you’re staying in Cherrapunji, the Polo Orchid Resort is only about 22 km away and offers easy access to the forest from their parking.

If you’re staying at the Polo Orchid Resort, you can drop off a child’s stroller at the parking area and then walk to the forest entrance it’s only a short walk from the resort. Also, the bus from Ramukhrai stops right near the forest gate, so a shared ride can be convenient if you’re not in a hurry. Leaving before 9am on a weekday usually keeps you clear of the morning traffic.

If you’re already staying at the Polo Orchid Resort, you can drop off a stroller at the parking and walk straight to the forest gate it’s just a few minutes away. On a weekday the bus from Ramukhrai usually takes about 35 minutes, while on weekends it can stretch to 45 50 minutes due to extra traffic. An early start, say around 7:30 am, keeps you clear of the morning rush on both days.

If you’re already at Polo Orchid Resort, the forest gate is just a short walk from the parking, so you can skip the bus entirely and head straight out. That saves a few minutes and lets the kids play on the way. If you prefer a shared ride, the bus from Ramukhrai stops right near the entrance, so you can hop on without a long detour.
