Seeking a less crowded route to Pazhamudhircholai for early morning photos

Abhishek Ganesan · 22 hours ago ·7 replies

I’m planning a quick trip from Madurai to Pazhamudhircholai for some early‑morning shots of the temple’s architecture. The place opens 24 hours and entry is free, but it can get busy during peak tourist times. Which route would keep me away from the crowds, maybe passing Alagar Kovil first? Also, any tips for capturing the intricate carvings without too many people in the frame?

If you head out early from Mount Retreat and take the route through Alagar Kovil, you’ll pass a quieter stretch before reaching Pazhamudhircholai. Try shooting the carvings in the early light, before the crowds arrive focus on the vertical panels and use a wide angle lens to capture the depth without people in the foreground. A quick pause at the temple’s outer courtyard can give you a clear, unobstructed view of the intricate stonework.

You could try leaving a bit later than dawn, say around 7:30. The road that passes Alagar Kovil then goes straight to Pazhamudhircholai without detours, and the traffic there is usually lighter until the temple opens fully. For the carvings, shoot from the outer courtyard where the light hits the stone directly this keeps the crowd out of the foreground and lets you focus on the fine details.

If you start from Mount Retreat and head out around 6 a.m., the road through Alagar Kovil is still fairly empty. Once you pass the temple, you can take the side lane that skirts the main entrance of Pazhamudhircholai, giving you a quieter angle for the carvings. Try shooting from the outer courtyard where the light falls directly on the stone; a slight tilt can help keep the crowds out of the foreground.

If you leave Mount Retreat around 5:45 am the Alagar Kovil stretch is almost empty, and you can take the side lane past the main gate of Pazhamudhircholai. Shoot the carvings from the outer courtyard when the sun is low on the left side the light cuts the stone and the crowds stay behind the entrance arch. This angle keeps the people out of the frame while still showing the intricate details.
