Planning a solo trek to Madhyamaheshwar Temple and nearby spots

Varun Modi · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a solo trip in October to visit the Madhyamaheshwar Temple and a few nearby attractions. What would a practical day‑by‑day itinerary look like that covers the temple, Tungnath Temple, and maybe Chopta or the Valley of Flowers? Also, how do I get from Rishikesh to the temple – is a cab or bus the best option?

A simple plan could be: Day 1 drive from Rishikesh to Ukhimath (about 6 7 hrs) and stay at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath for a relaxed evening. Day 2 visit Madhyamaheshwar Temple early, then head to Tungnath Temple by local bus or shared taxi (the bus is cheaper and runs daily). Day 3 take a short trek to Chopta and if weather allows, a quick drive to the Valley of Flowers from Joshimath. Bus and shared taxis are the most economical ways to reach the temples from Rishikesh.

You could stay at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath on Day 1. From Rishikesh the bus to Ukhimath runs roughly every 2 hours and takes about 6½ hours, so you’ll arrive in the afternoon. On Day 2, after visiting Madhyamaheshwar early, hop on the local bus that departs around 10 am for Tungnath it’s a 2 hour ride and the only reliable option. If you’re up for a trek, the 4 km walk to Chopta from Joshimath takes about 1.5 hours and the valley of flowers is a short drive from there.

If you’re willing to add a day in Joshimath, staying at Faraway Cottages gives easy access to the 4 km trek to Chopta and the quick drive to the Valley of Flowers. From Rishikesh the bus to Ukhimath runs every couple of hours, and once you’re in Ukhimath you can hop on a local shared taxi that leaves around 10 am for the 2 hour ride up to Tungnath. This way you keep the transport simple and save a bit on costs. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re okay with an extra night in Joshimath, staying at Faraway Cottages gives you a quick 4 km trek to Chopta and a short drive to the Valley of Flowers. From Rishikesh you can catch a bus to Ukhimath and then a local shared taxi to Tungnath; the taxi leaves around 10 am and the ride takes about two hours. This keeps transport simple and lets you focus on the temples.

If you want a quick trek to Chopta and a drive to the Valley of Flowers, staying overnight at Humming Bird By Aaryam in Ukhimath gives you a short walk to the temple and easy access to the shared taxis that go up to Tungnath and Joshimath. The local bus from Rishikesh leaves roughly every couple of hours, so you can catch a late morning departure and arrive by early afternoon.

The Valley of Flowers is only open until early September, so in October you’ll only see the higher altitudes around Chopta. If you want to keep travel simple, stay at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath for Day 1; it’s close to the temple and has a small guest house that can take you to the 4 km trail to Chopta the next day. From Rishikesh, a midday bus to Ukhimath leaves every two hours and takes about 6½ hours, which is the most reliable route.

You might consider staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam in Ukhimath for Day 1; it’s just a short walk from the temple and has a guest house that can arrange the 4 km trek to Chopta the next day. This keeps your transport simple and lets you focus on the temples.

If you’re staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam in Ukhimath, you can catch a local shared taxi that leaves around 10 am for Tungnath; the two hour ride is usually reliable and the taxi can drop you back near the temple for an evening visit. This way you avoid the long bus ride back and have a quick return for sunset prayers.

You might consider staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam on Day 1 so you’re within walking distance of Madhyamaheshwar and can hop on a shared taxi around 10 am for the 2 hour climb to Tungnath. That way you avoid the long return bus and still have time to rest before the trek to Chopta the next day.

The valley of flowers closes in early September, so in October you’ll mainly see Chopta’s pine forests and the higher trails. After visiting Madhyamaheshwar, you can catch a local shared taxi around 10 am for the 2 hour climb to Tungnath. Staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam keeps you within walking distance of the temple and gives easy access to the shared taxis for both the trek to Chopta and the return to Ukhimath.

If you want to squeeze in a quick trek to Chopta on Day 2, remember the 4 km walk from Joshimath takes about 1.5 hours each way, so plan to leave early in the morning after visiting Madhyamaheshwar. Staying at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath keeps you within a short walk of the temple and gives easy access to the shared taxis that go up to Tungnath and down to Joshimath.

If you’re already staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam on Day 1, you can walk straight to Madhyamaheshwar and then catch the 10 am shared taxi for Tungnath. The taxi usually drops you back near the temple in the evening, so you can spend the night there and head to the 4 km trail to Chopta the next morning without a bus change. This keeps the travel time short and the cost lower. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

Since you’ll be in Ukhimath for a couple of nights, staying at Humming Bird By Aaryam puts the temple within walking distance and gives you a ready pickup point for the shared taxi that leaves around 10 am for Tungnath. That way you can drop back near the temple in the evening and save a bus ride back to Rishikesh.

You might also book a room at Humming Bird By Aaryam it’s only a short walk from the temple and has a guest house that can arrange the shared taxi to Tungnath. If you plan to trek to Chopta on Day 2, starting early after the morning prayers gives you plenty of daylight, and the 4 km walk takes about 1.5 hours each way. What time do you think you’ll arrive in Ukhimath from Rishikesh?
