You could also bring a small water bottle and a pack of sunscreen for the kids the island gets sunny and the jetty can be hot. If you’re planning a short visit, ask the local bus operator for the exact time the last ferry back to the jetty departs; that way you can time the boat ride to finish before sunset.

The tunnel walk itself takes about fifteen minutes and then you’re just a short stroll or bike ride away from Varkala Beach. From there it’s only about a kilometer to Papanasam Beach, so you could finish the day with a sunset on the quieter sands. If you’re looking for a convenient base that’s less than a kilometre from the tunnel, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is a solid choice.

The boat to Umananda Temple takes about 30 minutes each way, so you can fit it into a short window. If you start early, the river is calmer and you’ll see more birds before the crowds arrive. After visiting the temple you can stroll the island’s main paths, spot the local villages, and catch a sunset over the Brahmaputra. If you’re pressed for time, skip the temple and focus on the wildlife trails and the iconic Peacock House; it still gives a good taste of the island’s culture.

You might also want a light, breathable layer for the evenings. In October the nights can dip close to March’s lows, so a wind breaker or a fleece works well. If you’re staying near the temple, the Pratiksha Himalayan Retreat has well ventilated rooms that stay cool when the temperature drops.

If you’re staying at the WelcomHeritage Panjim Inn, you can walk from the Fontainhas stop to the beach in about 25 minutes, then hop on the same bus back to Panjim. The bus stops just outside the hotel, so a single 1 rupee ticket covers the whole loop. Have you tried the early morning or late night services on that route?

If you’re heading back to Amritsar after the fort and Hussainiwala, the Ramada by Wyndham Amritsar has family rooms and is only about 82 km away. It could be a convenient spot to stretch your legs and grab a meal before the drive back.

If you’re aiming for crisp shots of the play sets, a small tripod is handy for longer exposures, especially when kids are moving. Shoot around 7 8 am or after 4 pm for softer light. The park’s own lighting is fine for evening, but for daylight a tripod keeps the camera steady. Parking near Capital O Siddartha Grand is convenient for setting up.

You might also find the weekly Thursday bazar interesting it’s a smaller crowd and vendors set up fresh textiles and phulkari embroidery. After the walk, a quick stop at the nearby Super Collection O Railway Station Road Near Clock Tower gives a relaxed break.

If you’re aiming for a quieter run, the early morning slot before 7 am is usually the least crowded. The queue tends to swell around 10 am when the first groups arrive, so a 2 pm slot still gives decent flow but fewer people. Staying at Lemon Tree Hotel Rajkot makes it easy to hit the launch right when the lines start to thin.

If you’re staying near the beach, the Hotel Royal Grand Heritage is only a few minutes from the lighthouse, so a short walk or a quick rickshaw will do. From the airport, a taxi straight to Puri is the fastest way, but the state bus that stops at Puri Bus Stand is cheaper and still gets you within a few minutes of the lighthouse once you hop on a local minibus. The railway station is a bit farther out, so a cab or rickshaw from there is still needed.

If you’re staying at FabHotel Amaltas, the city bus stand is just a 200 metre walk from the lobby. Bus 12 stops right outside the stand and leaves every 15 20 minutes, so you can hop on almost immediately. The ride to the memorial takes about ten minutes. If you prefer a direct walk, it’s only a ten minute stroll, but the bus is usually quicker for that short hop.

You could start with the tunnel walk, then grab a quick bite at a beachside café there’s one right on Varkala Beach that serves fresh coconut water and small plates. After that, a short drive to Papanasam Beach is worth it for a quieter sunset spot. If you want a comfortable base close to both beaches, Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is less than a kilometre from the tunnel and gives easy beach access.

If you’re only able to spare a few hours, consider a quick coffee at Courtyard Raipur before heading to Sirpur. The temple complex is compact, so you can walk the main stupas in about two hours and still return before dark. If you can stretch to a half day, a brief stop at Kanger’s visitor centre first thing in the morning gives a taste of wildlife without the full drive.

You might also consider a quick stop at the ancient Dhauli rock edict site. It’s roughly a 90 minute drive from Saptasajya and offers a quiet spot to see the famous peace inscription. If you end up staying in Bhubaneswar, Hotel O Saket Homes is a convenient option nearby.

If you’re in a hurry, you can also grab a quick coffee at Hotel O Saket Homes nearby before you head back; it’s only about a ten minute drive from the temple and offers a quick break while you scan the plaque.
