Should I stop at Hemakuta Hill Temple on my way through Hampi?

Swarup Noronha · 7 hours ago ·6 replies

I’m driving through the Hampi region next week and wonder if it’s worth pulling off at Hemakuta Hill Temple. The temple complex dates to the 14th century, is open 24 hours, and offers a panoramic view of the ruins. It’s just 1 km from Virupaksha Temple and 3 km from Vittala, so it’s easy to combine a quick visit with other nearby sites. Would the extra 30‑40 minutes be worth the added fuel and time, or is it better to skip it if I’m just passing through?

If you’re already stopping at Virupaksha or Vittala, the extra 30 40 minutes to Hemakuta is worth it for the sunset view over the ruins. The hill sits right on the ridge, so you get a clear panorama without any crowds. Just be sure to leave enough time to descend before dark if you’re on a tight schedule.

If you’re already stopping at Virupaksha or Vittala, the extra 30 40 minutes to Hemakuta gives a great sunset view without crowds. If you’re just passing through, you can skip it and head straight to a nearby hotel like Royal Rich County in Gangavathi for a quick break.

If you’re already stopping at Virupaksha or Vittala, the extra 30 40 minutes to Hemakuta is a quick climb that gives you a quiet spot to take photos of the whole complex, especially at sunrise. The temple itself is modest, but the view over the ruined city is worth the short detour. If you’re in a hurry, you could instead grab a quick break at Royal Rich County in Gangavathi and skip the hill.

If you’re only on a tight pass, the hill is a quick detour but you’ll miss the best sunset angle. The best time is early afternoon when the sun is low enough to light the ruins without glare. Parking is free at the temple base, and the climb is just a few hundred steps, so you can fit it in without much extra fuel.

You can park for free at the base of the temple and the climb is only a few hundred steps, so it fits easily into a short stop. If you’re on a tight schedule, a quick break at Royal Rich County in Gangavathi is an alternative.
