If you’re staying near Kohima, a short drive from Niraamaya Retreats Aradura to the village is handy, and the resort’s parking can hold a camera bag. From Dimapur Airport, the taxi stand is clearly marked; just tell the driver to keep the gear in the back seat so it won’t shift on the 30 minute ride. This keeps your equipment safe while you set up for the night carnival.

If you’re okay with a short uphill walk from Christ Church, you can skip the auto entirely and save a few rupees. The climb to Jakhu takes about 15 minutes and gives a nice view of the valley. After the temple, a quick stroll back to Mall Road gets you to the tea stall for the thali no extra transport needed. If you do want a place to stay, Hotel Combermere is just under half a kilometre from the temple and offers budget rooms.

You could leave for Deoria Tal right after dawn, then drive to Chopta in about fifteen minutes. Spend an hour in the pine forest there and you’ll still have time to return to the temple before dusk. If you’re staying near Ukhimath, the Humming Bird By Aaryam keeps the loop short. What time do you plan to start the day?

The falls are close to the old Guntur Fort ruins, which locals say were built to protect the valley from floods. The fort’s stone walls still show carvings that some believe link to the same healing folklore. If you’re staying in town, Treebo Abhi Suites is only a short drive away and many guests mention spotting the shrine on a walk to the falls.

You could bring a child size snorkel set to keep the little ones safe in the shallow reef. The tide pool near the snorkeling spot is shallow enough for them to wade in and watch fish. If you’re staying close, the Best Western Plus Tejvivaan is only a short walk from the pier, so you can grab a snack before heading out.

You might also catch a quick shot of the old ticket office on the platform it still has a faded 1950s route poster that looks great in early light. If you decide to head out, the 3 km walk to Janakpur Dham is doable and gives you a chance to snap the temple’s carved pillars up close. For a quick break near the station, the small roadside tea stall with steaming masala chai is a favorite among commuters.

If you’re staying at Niraamaya Retreats Aradura Kohima, you can hop out right after lunch and the garden will be almost empty by 12 pm on a weekday. The 24 hour opening also means you can visit around midnight or early morning with virtually no one else around. That gives you the quiet stroll you’re after without breaking the bank.

You could also take a quick detour to the Bhubaneswar City Museum it’s only about thirty kilometres from the hill and gives a nice snapshot of Odisha’s art and history. If you end up staying in Bhubaneswar, Hotel O Saket Homes is a convenient option nearby. Have you thought about visiting the nearby Udayagiri caves as well?

If you head early, the canal is usually less crowded than mid afternoon. A good spot is just upstream of the bridge near the 20 km mark from the Statue of Unity it’s quieter and still close enough for a quick return. Staying at Soil to Soul Resort in Ekta Nagar gives you easy bike parking and a quiet spot right on the canal, so you can set up fishing gear before the crowds arrive.

If you’re heading out after the sunset, a quick walk along the quieter stretch of Miramar is a nice way to unwind before heading back. The beach there is less crowded and the waves are calmer, making it a good spot to stretch your legs after a day of activities.

If you’re not sure whether the shared auto drops you straight at the launch, let me know some drivers stop a bit earlier and you have to walk a short distance.

You might also want to check the little viewpoint right next to Lower Manair Dam it’s only a five minute walk from the parking and gives a quick panoramic shot of the reservoir and surrounding hills. That quick detour can make the short walk feel a bit more rewarding.

You could hit Saraswati first, then head north to Rajaji’s main entrance around the mid morning. After a quick safari, drive back south and stop at ArtBuzz Rishikesh for a coffee before heading home. Inside Saraswati, the kids will love the small river walk trail and the bird watching spot near the visitor centre, which is a short, easy loop.

A good mix is to hit Pulicat in the morning for a quick pedal boat ride kids love the view of flamingos up close and then head to Nelapattu around noon for the guided wetland walk. The sanctuary’s quieter setting lets adults dig into the bird charts, while the kids can spot herons. Staying at PPH Living KVR Residency keeps both sites within a short drive and gives you a relaxed base for the day.

If you’re staying at Vishnu Lok near the railway station, the train drop off is just a short walk from the hotel, so you can grab a quick 10 minute taxi or the local bus straight to Simtola. The taxi fare from the station is about ₹4,400 5,000, which is cheaper than a full cab from the city centre and keeps the kids together. This setup saves you a few minutes of travel time and avoids juggling luggage at the main bus stop. Does anyone have a tip on the best time of day to catch the local bus from Simtola to avoid crowds?
