Cheap route from Pithoragarh to Kali River after 5pm?

Isha Chhabra · 4 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’ll be arriving at Pithoragarh bus stand around 5 pm and want to reach the Kali River for a quick rafting session. The river is open all day and entry is free. What is the most budget‑friendly way to get there from the bus stand in the late afternoon? Would a shared taxi or local bus be best, or is walking an option?

The nearest stop for a local bus is the “Kali River Bus Stand” about 3 km from the main Pithoragarh stand. A short walk of 20 25 minutes is doable if you’re okay with a steep climb. If you’d rather avoid walking, a shared auto rickshaw will take you directly to the rafting launch for roughly ₹200, which is cheaper than a private taxi. The auto rickshaws run until dusk, so you should catch one soon after 5 pm.

You could also catch a shared auto from the main stand right after you arrive. They usually run until dusk and the fare is around ₹200, which is cheaper than a private taxi. If you’re up for a bit of exercise, the walk to the launch is roughly 3 km and takes about 20 25 minutes, but the route is steep. For a quick rest afterward, the nearby Brij Atmanya Bhowali in Nainital isn’t far and has good local options.

If you’re okay with a bit of waiting, the 5 pm local bus to Kali River Bus Stand departs roughly every 30 minutes and costs just ₹150. It stops right at the launch point, so you avoid the steep climb. The shared auto is cheaper than a private taxi but takes a few minutes longer because it stops for other riders. Either way, you’ll get there before dusk.

You could also catch the 5 pm local bus that leaves the main stand every 30 minutes. The fare is just ₹150 and it drops you right at the launch, so you avoid the steep climb. If you’re in a hurry, the shared auto is similar in cost and runs until dusk, but it may take a few extra minutes because it stops for other riders.

If you’re not sure whether the shared auto drops you straight at the launch, let me know some drivers stop a bit earlier and you have to walk a short distance.

The 5 pm local bus is a good bet if you want a quick ride straight to the launch point. It stops right at the launch, so you skip the steep climb. If you’re arriving a little earlier, you can also hop on a shared auto; they usually leave a few minutes after the bus and the fare is similar. After rafting you could head back to the main stand or consider staying at Brij Atmanya Bhowali Nainital for a comfortable overnight if you plan to explore more of the area.

If you’re looking for a quick stop after the rafting, the nearby Brij Atmanya Bhowali Nainital is a good choice for an overnight stay. It’s about a 1 hour drive from the launch point, so you can drop off your gear, grab a meal, and head back to Pithoragarh early next morning without a long walk.

You could also grab the 5 pm local bus; it runs every 30 minutes and drops you right at the launch, so you skip the steep climb. If you prefer a quicker hop, a shared auto leaves a few minutes later for about ₹200. After rafting, you might consider staying at Brij Atmanya Bhowali Nainital for a relaxed overnight just a bit farther but worth the comfort.

The 5 pm local bus drops you right at the launch, so you avoid the steep climb. If you’re worried about timing, the bus leaves every 30 minutes, so you can plan to catch the next one after you disembark. Do you need a spot for your gear once you’re on the river?

The local bus that leaves at 5 pm drops you straight at the launch, so you avoid the steep climb entirely. If you prefer a quicker hop, a shared auto will start a few minutes later for about ₹200 and takes a bit longer because it stops for other riders. Do you need a place to store your gear once you’re on the river?

You could ask the launch staff if they have a small locker or secure spot for your gear while you’re rafting. That way you don’t have to carry everything on the walk back.
