How long should I spend at Mysore Zoo for a day trip?

Sonali Menezes · 4 days ago ·10 replies

I’m planning a quick visit to Mysore Zoo and the nearby spots like Mysore Palace and Karanji Lake. Since the zoo covers 157 acres and has over 168 species, I’m not sure if a few hours will be enough. The zoo is open all day, so I could fit it in with a short walk to the palace and a quick stop at the lake. What’s a realistic time allotment for a day trip that covers the zoo and these nearby attractions?

A good rule of thumb is about 2½ to 3 hours for the zoo, then 45 minutes to an hour to walk to the palace, and another 30 minutes for a quick stroll around Karanji Lake. That gives you roughly 4½ to 5 hours total. If you’re staying near the city, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is just a short drive away and could be a convenient base.

A good idea is to hit the zoo first thing in the morning, say 9 a.m., when the animals are most active and the heat is lighter. After about 2½ hours you can walk to the palace, which takes roughly 15 minutes on foot, and then head to Karanji Lake for a quick stroll. If you need a place to stay nearby, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is only a kilometer away and offers easy access to all three spots.

You might want to start at the zoo right after it opens to catch the animals in action. There’s a small parking lot near the entrance, so you can leave the car and walk the 15 minute stretch to Mysore Palace. From the palace, a quick 10 minute drive gets you to Karanji Lake where you can stroll the lake path. If you need a place to stay, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is just under a kilometre from the zoo and the palace. A quick lunch stop near the zoo can keep the day on track. The zoo opens at 9 a.m., so you could spend about 2½ hours there, walk to the palace in 15 minutes, then head to Karanji Lake for a 10 minute drive and a short stroll. If you need a place to stay, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is just under a kilometre from the zoo and palace.

If you start the zoo right after it opens, you’ll see most of the 168 species before the heat rises. From the zoo’s parking you can walk about 15 minutes to the palace, then a quick 10 minute drive to Karanji Lake. A quick lunch near the zoo keeps the day on track. If you need a nearby stay, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is just under a kilometre away.

You could start at 9 a.m. to catch the early morning buzz at the zoo, spend about 2½ hours, then walk the 15 minutes to Mysore Palace. From the palace, a short 10 minute drive takes you to Karanji Lake for a quick lake walk. If you need a place to stay nearby, the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel is just under a kilometre away.

If you’re short on time, consider starting at the zoo right after it opens at 9 am. Spend about 2½ hours there, then walk 15 minutes to Mysore Palace. From the palace you can catch a quick 10 minute taxi to Karanji Lake and stroll the lake path for another 20 30 minutes. A nearby stay like the Grand Continent Mysore A Sarovar Portico Affiliate Hotel keeps you within a kilometre of all three spots.
