Which transport is best for a family trip to Simtola from Dehradun?

Irfan Banerjee · 1 month ago ·19 replies

I’m planning a weekend visit to Simtola with my kids and wondering which way to get there. We could take a cab from Dehradun, hop on a bus at Simtola Bus Stop, or catch a train from Dehradun Railway Station. How do these options stack up in terms of convenience, cost and travel time for a family group? And if we wanted to fly in, how useful is Jolly Grant Airport for reaching Simtola?

If you’re taking the train from Dehradun, the station is close to Vishnu Lok, so you can drop off the kids there and hop on a local bus or taxi to Simtola. The bus from Simtola Bus Stop usually takes about 30 minutes, but a cab can shave a few minutes off and keep luggage handling simple. Flying via Jolly Grant Airport is less practical the airport is about 70 km away and you’d still need a car or shuttle to reach the hill station.

If you take the local bus from Simtola Bus Stop, the fare is about ₹30 per person, and the journey takes roughly 30 35 minutes. The bus runs every 15 20 minutes, so you can get on without long waits, but it can be crowded with kids. A cab from Dehradun will cost roughly ₹400 ₹500 one way, but you get door to door service and can keep the luggage and children together. The train option is cheaper, around ₹10 ₹15 per person for the short ride to Vishnu Lok, but you’ll need to transfer to a bus or taxi from the station to Simtola. If you’re flying in, Jolly Grant Airport is about 70 km away, so you’d still need a car or shared ride to reach the hill station, making the flight less convenient for a quick weekend trip.

The bus from Simtola Bus Stop runs every 15 20 minutes, so you can hop on almost immediately. If you prefer a smoother ride with luggage, a cab from Dehradun’s Vishnu Lok area is about ₹4,400 ₹5,000 one way but keeps the kids together. If you’re staying near the station, Vishnu Lok near Dehradun Railway Station is a convenient base for the train transfer.

If you prefer a more direct route, a cab from the station costs about ₹4,400 ₹5,000 one way, which keeps the kids together and saves a few minutes of travel time.

If you’re staying at Vishnu Lok near the railway station, you can drop the kids straight off the train and catch a quick 10 minute taxi or a local bus to Simtola. The taxi fare from the station is around ₹4,400 ₹5,000, which is cheaper than a full cab from the city centre and keeps the family together without extra transfers. This way you avoid waiting for a bus from the main bus stop and still get a smooth ride up the hill.

A quick tip if you stay at Vishnu Lok near the station: the local bus to Simtola leaves about every 15 minutes, but the first departure after 6 pm tends to be less crowded, so if you want a quieter ride you could aim for that slot.

Have you checked the exact departure times for the Dehradun Vishnu Lok train on weekends? Knowing when the first train leaves could help you time the bus or taxi pick up at Simtola.

If you’re staying at Vishnu Lok near the railway station, you can catch the early morning train to Vishnu Lok that leaves around 6:00 am. From there a quick 10 minute taxi to Simtola keeps the kids together and avoids the bus crowd that tends to pile up after 6 pm. Let me know if you need the exact timetable for that train.

If you’re staying at Vishnu Lok near the station, you can drop the kids off right next to the train platform and then hop on a quick 10 minute taxi or the local bus to Simtola. The bus leaves about every 15 minutes, and the first departure after 6 pm tends to be less crowded, so if you want a quieter ride aim for that slot. This keeps the family together and cuts the extra luggage handling you’d have to do at the main bus stop.

If you book a room at Vishnu Lok near Dehradun Railway Station, the train drop off is a quick walk from the lobby, so you can grab a 10 minute taxi to Simtola right after you arrive. That cut shorts the bus wait and keeps the kids together. Have you checked the exact early morning train timetable yet?
