Should I explore Umngot River’s history or skip to other sites?

Dhruv Patel · 3 days ago ·10 replies

I’m heading to Meghalaya for the first time and I want to get a sense of its heritage. The Umngot River has been a vital waterway for the local Khasi and Jaintia communities, and the British built the Dawki Bridge there in 1932. But there are other historical spots nearby like the Living Root Bridges in Cherrapunji and the ancient village of Mawlynnong. Should I spend my first day learning about the river’s past, or focus on those other sites first?

If you’re staying near Cherrapunji, the Polo Orchid Resort is a convenient base. From there you can hop over to the living root bridges in a few hours, then head back to Dawki to see the bridge and learn about the river’s history. It gives you a quick taste of both heritage and the natural engineering that defines Meghalaya.

You could start at Dawki early, since the bridge is only about a 90 minute drive from Cherrapunji. The walk across the bridge gives a quick taste of the river’s history before you head back to the root bridges and Mawlynnong. That way you cover the major heritage spots in one day without missing the living root bridge walks.

You could start early at Dawki, walk across the 1932 bridge, then head straight to Cherrapunji. The drive to the Living Root Bridges takes about an hour, and the walk from the bridge to Mawlynnong is another 30 40 minutes. This way you get the river history and the iconic root bridge experience before visiting the village. If you prefer a base close to the root bridges, Polo Orchid Resort is convenient.

You might want to check out the local museum at Dawki that explains why the bridge was built in 1932. It’s only a short walk from the bridge and gives a quick background before you head back to the root bridges and Mawlynnong.

If you’re staying at Polo Orchid Resort in Cherrapunji, you can head to Dawki first in the morning, then return to the resort for lunch before driving to the living root bridges. The drive from the resort to the bridges takes about 30 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of daylight to walk the trail and see the village of Mawlynnong afterward. This way you hit the river history, the iconic bridges, and the village in a single day without rushing.

Since you’ll likely be staying at Polo Orchid Resort in Cherrapunji, a good plan is to hit Dawki first thing in the morning to walk the 1932 bridge and visit the small museum nearby. After a quick break back at the resort, you can drive about an hour to the living root bridges and then a short walk to Mawlynnong. This keeps the river history front and center while still covering the iconic root bridge experience. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.
