What’s the best way to reach Chembra Peak from Calicut Airport for a first visit?

Ketaki Mann · 4 days ago ·11 replies

I’m planning a first visit to Chembra Peak and I’ll be arriving at Calicut International Airport. I’ve seen that cab service is available, but I’m wondering if a bus from Wayanad Bus Stand is a more practical option. Since the peak is open all day and entry is free, I just need reliable transport that gets me to the trailhead without too much hassle. Which mode would you recommend and how long would it take?

If you take a bus from Calicut to Wayanad Bus Stand it’s a straight through service that runs about 7 to 8 hours. From the bus stand the local bus to the Chembra trailhead takes roughly 1½ to 2 hours, so you’re looking at a total of about 9 hours from the airport. The cab option is quicker about 4½ hours but the bus can be cheaper if you book early. If you’re staying in the area, the Sterling Vythiri Wayanad hotel is a short walk from the bus stand, which makes catching the next leg easy.

If you’re willing to spend a few extra hours, you can catch a direct bus from Calicut airport to Wayanad bus stand it usually takes around 8 to 9 hours. From there, a local bus to the Chembra trailhead adds another 90 minutes. If you prefer a shorter overall trip, a cab from the airport is roughly 4¾ hours, but the bus is cheaper and you can stop at a place like Sterling Vythiri Wayanad on the way. If you’re okay with a longer day, the bus from Calicut airport to Wayanad Bus Stand runs every few hours and then a local bus to the trailhead takes about 90 minutes. The total travel time is roughly 9 10 hours, but you can break it up by stopping at a place like Sterling Vythiri Wayanad for a quick rest. The cab is faster under five hours but the bus gives you a chance to see more of the countryside and save a bit of money.

If you’re already heading to the bus stand, a local bus to the trailhead leaves every two hours or so, so you can time it with your arrival. The ride from the stand takes about 90 minutes, but the bus route goes past the scenic Wayanad hills worth seeing if you have extra time. If you need a place to rest between legs, the Sterling Vythiri Wayanad is just half a kilometre from the bus stop.

If you’re already heading to the bus stand, consider stopping at Flora Vythiri Resort before the local bus. It’s just over a kilometre away and gives you a quick break with good food. The local service to the trailhead still takes about 90 minutes, so you’ll arrive well before sunset.
