If you’re looking for a quieter break, head to Marine Drive after the crowds thin out around 6 pm. The promenade is flat, and you can find a spot on the beach to watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea. It’s just a short walk from InterContinental Marine Drive, so you can drop by for a drink later if you want to stay in the area.

A quick tip is that the launch usually opens at 6 am and the flow stays strong until about 9 am, so if you can start right when it opens you’ll catch a good run before the queue builds. If you’re staying near the river, the Lemon Tree Hotel Rajkot is only a short walk from the launch point, which makes it easy to hop on early or wait it out. You could start Day 1 early, head to Loktak, trek the 3 km path around the lake and then board the local “phumdi” boat that takes about 45 minutes. On Day 2, after a quick visit to the Kangpokpi market for a snack, drive to Keibul Lamjao the king fisher trail is a half hour walk from the gate. Staying at Classic Grande Imphal keeps you within 35 km of all sites and the concierge can arrange a daily taxi.

Since the colonial ruins are scattered around the village, a quick walk from the main gate to the old fort walls gives you most of the highlights. If you want a bit more context, ask the guide at the gate for a free 10 minute tour they often spot lesser known carvings. Staying a night at the Samanvay Boutique Hotel in Udupi lets you catch an early 22A bus and avoid crowds the next day.

A good idea is to bring a polarising filter; it cuts glare off the rock surface and deepens the shadows in the carvings. That extra gear lets you squeeze more detail out of the early light without needing extra stops. If you’re near Theni, the Le Shiv Executive Suite is a convenient base.

If you want a quick coffee and a place to sit, the café inside the gallery’s own lobby is handy. For a slightly more relaxed spot, head to the café in the lobby of Vivanta Bengaluru, Residency Road it’s only a minute’s walk and offers a good selection of coffee and light bites.

You could leave around 6 am from Paderu so you get to Araku by mid morning, spend a few hours there, then head straight to the caves. The Araku to Borra drive is only about 30 km, so you’ll finish the cave tour by early afternoon and still have time to return. A private taxi or a hired car gives the most flexibility, especially if you want to stop at a coffee plantation or the Tribal Museum on the way. If you prefer public transport, the local buses run between Paderu and Araku, but the next leg from Araku to the caves is less frequent, so check the timetable ahead of time. If you decide to stay overnight, Casa Woods Resort @ Araku Valley is conveniently located near the main road and within walking distance of the town centre.

If you’re staying at the WelcomHeritage Panjim Inn, you can walk from Fontainhas to the beach in about 30 minutes and then hop on a local bus back to Panjim. The bus stop is right outside the hotel, so you only need a single ticket for the whole loop. This way you keep transport costs to a minimum while still seeing all the free sights.

Sunday evenings tend to be the busiest, so if you can get there before 6 a.m. you’ll avoid the crowd. If you’re staying at the Jai Mahal Palace, the walk takes about fifteen minutes, so you can time your arrival right when the lights go up.

If you’re just stopping, the 12 km detour via Radhanagar is the quickest and keeps the road smoother. It gives you a calm spot for a quick snorkel before heading back. If you’re willing to add a few extra kilometres, Elephant Beach offers more windsurfing gear and a rougher shoreline. Either way, you can pop into the TSG Grand for a quick swim or coffee near Adda.

From the airport the cab takes about 20 minutes straight to the temple stand, while the bus route heads toward the Undavalli Caves first and then backtracks, adding roughly 15 minutes of travel and a short walk from the bus stop to the entrance. If you’re staying at Capital O Siddartha Grand, a quick taxi drop off cuts the walk entirely and keeps you on a tighter schedule, especially if you want to catch the early morning light.

I’ve heard the dhaba near Sunita Elite also offers a small seating area with a kids’ corner and a selection of fresh lassi and aloo paratha. Does anyone know if they serve any local sweets like halwa or kheer that parents might enjoy while waiting for the crowd to ease? The shrine at the base of the falls is usually visited just before the monsoon when the water level rises. Locals say the Pulicara tribe used the surrounding forest for hunting, and the Kamma tribe built the shrine in the 1800s to thank the water for protecting their cattle. If you stay near Guntur, Treebo Abhi Suites is a short drive away and many guests spot the shrine on a walk to the falls.

If you’re pressed for time, a quick auto from the Roorkee bus stand takes you straight to the main gate in about five minutes. Inside you can spend a few minutes at the shrine, then head to the kitchen for a free thali no sign up needed. After the langar, if you want a brief rest before heading to Rishikesh, the Ambrosia Sarovar Portico in Haridwar is just over ten kilometres away and offers decent rooms.

You might also want to note that the museum’s lighting changes in the afternoon the skylights allow more natural light in the early part of the day, which makes the artifacts look a bit brighter, but after 2 pm the artificial lighting dominates. If you’re looking for a nearby place to sit and warm up, the Super Collection O Kalinga Bapuji Nagar is only 0.4 km away and has a small café.
