If you time the trek for the first week of September, you’ll likely see very few trekkers on the trail. By the second week most people have already returned to the valley, so the path to Chitkul stays almost deserted. Staying in Sangla at Hotel Batseri keeps you close to the route while still avoiding any crowd that peaks later in the month.

If you’re staying near the ghat, the Treat Hotel Nashik City Center is about two kilometres away and lets you hop out around 6:30 am when the crowd is thin and the water is still cool. That early slot also keeps you away from the midday heat while still catching a decent flow after the monsoon.

If you’re chasing the best sunrise light, start at Assi Ghat the early morning mist and soft gold on the water are classic. For sunset, head to Dashashwamedh Ghat where the evening glow hits the stone steps and boats. A quieter tripod spot is the small riverside park just east of the ghats; it’s less crowded and still offers a good view of the Ganges. If you’re staying nearby, the Hotel Abhinav International is only a short walk from both sites.

If you’re staying at Neemrana’s Baradari Palace you’re already within half a kilometre of the palace, so you can simply walk or hop on the city bus that stops right outside the entrance. A good time to visit is early October the heat has dropped but the crowds are still light, and the evenings are pleasantly cool for a stroll through the gardens.

You might also try the little stall on the corner of the main road that serves a spicy Gujarati thali and freshly made dhokla; the plates are colorful and the steam makes great shots. If you’re willing to walk a bit further, The Grand Raveta restaurant a short drive away has a more polished setting and the same local dishes, so you can get both street style and upscale food photography in one day.

You can catch a local bus from Chandigarh’s bus stand to Rupnagar; the route stops near the gurdwara complex and takes about 1½ hours. If you’d rather stay in Chandigarh, the train from the main station to Rupnagar is about an hour and you can take a shared taxi from the station to the gurdwaras. Staying at Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh keeps you only 11 km from the town centre and close to the festival activities.
