When is Hola Mohalla held in Kiratpur Sahib and how to reach it from Chandigarh?

Karthik Deshpande · 1 month ago ·22 replies

Hi all, I’m planning a short pilgrimage to Kiratpur Sahib and want to time my trip with the Hola Mohalla festival. I know the town is 20 km from Anandpur Sahib and the gurdwaras are open 24 hours with free entry. Do you know which month the festival usually takes place and the best way to get there from Chandigarh International Airport? Also, is it better to stay in Rupnagar or stay in Chandigarh and commute?

Hola Mohalla is normally held in March, usually the last week of the month. From Chandigarh International Airport you can take a taxi to the city centre and then catch a train or bus to Rupnagar, which is about 35 km away. Staying in Rupnagar keeps you closer to the gurdwaras; a good option is Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh, which is only about 11 km from the town centre.

The festival falls in March, usually the last week of the month. From Chandigarh you can take a train from the main station to Rupnagar; the journey is about an hour and the station is close to the gurdwaras. If you prefer a hotel, Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh sits just over 11 km from the town centre and is a popular choice for pilgrims.

You can catch a local bus from Chandigarh’s bus stand to Rupnagar; the route stops near the gurdwara complex and takes about 1½ hours. If you’d rather stay in Chandigarh, the train from the main station to Rupnagar is about an hour and you can take a shared taxi from the station to the gurdwaras. Staying at Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh keeps you only 11 km from the town centre and close to the festival activities.

You might want to book a local bus that leaves Chandigarh’s bus stand at 07:00 and arrives in Rupnagar around 09:30. The fare is roughly ₹200 per person. Once there, a shared auto can drop you at the gurdwara complex in about 10 minutes. If you stay in Chandigarh, the train to Rupnagar departs every hour from 06:30, so you can reach the town by 08:00 and still catch the morning prayers.

A quick check shows the festival falls in late March. If you’re flying into Chandigarh, the quickest route is a taxi to Chandigarh Railway Station, then a train to Rupnagar the journey takes about an hour. From the Rupnagar station a shared auto will drop you at the gurdwara complex in roughly ten minutes. If you’d rather stay in Chandigarh, you can catch an early train and still arrive before the morning prayers.

You could also catch the early morning train from Chandigarh to Rupnagar at 06:30; it arrives around 07:30 and the station is only a few minutes from the gurdwara by auto. If you stay in Chandigarh, the shared taxi from the station takes about ten minutes. For a comfortable stay close to the festival, Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh is a popular choice, only about 11 km from the town centre.

Since the festival is in late March, you’ll want to arrive early in the week. If you fly into Chandigarh International, a taxi to the railway station and then a 1 hour train to Rupnagar is the fastest. From the station a shared auto takes about ten minutes to the gurdwara complex. Staying at Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh keeps you only 11 km from the town centre, so you can easily attend the morning prayers and the evening processions. If you prefer a quieter base, staying in Chandigarh and taking the train each day works, but you’ll spend more time commuting.

The Hola Mohalla usually wraps up in early April, so if you arrive a couple of days before the last week of March you’ll still catch the main events. A convenient stay is Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh in Rupnagar it’s only about 11 km from the gurdwara complex and close to the shared auto pick ups. If you prefer a quieter base, staying in Chandigarh and taking the early morning train to Rupnagar each day keeps you within an hour’s commute. Does anyone know if the festival schedule changes that year?

The festival usually wraps up in early April, so arriving a couple of days before the last week of March lets you catch the main events. Staying at Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh keeps you only 11 km from the gurdwara complex, which is handy for the evening processions that run until late. If you stay in Chandigarh you’ll need to travel back and forth each day, which can be tiring after a long day of prayers.

The Hola Mohalla dates shift with the lunar calendar, so it’s best to check the exact week in early March. If you stay near the gurdwaras, Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh in Rupnagar is only about 11 km away and offers free parking for pilgrims. If you prefer a quieter base in Chandigarh, you can take the early morning train to Rupnagar each day, but you’ll be back in the city by evening. Does anyone know if the 2026 schedule has been announced yet?

If you prefer staying closer to the gurdwaras, a quick 30 minute bus from Chandigarh’s bus stand to Rupnagar usually leaves at 07:00 and drops you near the station. From there a shared auto takes about ten minutes to the complex. Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh is only 11 km from the town centre, so you can catch morning prayers and stay in the same place for the evening processions.

If you’re looking for a quiet stay while still near the festival, the Asanar Hills in Rupnagar is a solid choice. It’s about 24 km from the gurdwara complex, so a shared auto will drop you in under 15 minutes. The rooms are decent and the price is usually lower than Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh, giving you a bit more budget flexibility.
