Weekend trip to Paniyeli Poru: transport and must‑see nearby spots?

Vaidehi Jani · 6 days ago ·14 replies

I’m thinking of a quick weekend escape to Paniyeli Poru from Kochi. I know the place is open all day and free to enter, but I’d like to map out the best transport options from Aluva railway station or the Cochin airport. Also, since the area is about 20 km from Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, should I plan a day visit there too? What would be the best way to get around once I’m at Paniyeli Poru?

From Aluva you can take a shared taxi or a local bus that heads toward Paniyeli Poru; the ride is about 30 minutes and costs roughly ₹150. If you’re coming from the airport, a private cab is the quickest way, around 35 minutes. Once at the poru you can walk the 200 meter trail to the main waterhole, or rent a small motorbike if you want to explore the surrounding paddy fields. A short drive to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is only 20 kilometres, so a day trip there is doable if you leave early. If you need a place to stay nearby, Maram Resort Mamalakandam is a five star option a short drive from the sanctuary.

If you’re heading from Aluva, the quickest public option to Thattekad is the KSRTC bus that stops near the sanctuary; the trip takes about 40 minutes and costs a few rupees. From Paniyeli Poru you can walk a short trail to the main waterhole, but renting a small motorbike gives you a better view of the surrounding paddy fields. A day trip to Thattekad is doable if you leave early, and staying a night at Maram Resort Mamalakandam would let you enjoy the sanctuary the next morning. You could also take the KSRTC bus from Aluva that stops right outside the sanctuary it’s cheaper than a cab and runs about every 30 minutes. Once you’re at Paniyeli Poru, a short 200 meter walk gets you to the main waterhole, but renting a small motorbike lets you see the surrounding paddy fields. If you plan a day trip to Thattekad, staying overnight at Maram Resort Mamalakandam gives you early morning access to the sanctuary.

If you’re staying overnight, Maram Resort Mamalakandam is only about 20 km from the sanctuary and gives you early access. From the resort you can catch a local bus heading toward Thattekad; the journey takes roughly 40 minutes and the fare is nominal. The bus stops close to the visitor center, so you can hop on right away. This keeps the travel time minimal and lets you enjoy the birdwatching before sunset.

If you’re heading from Aluva, the KSRTC bus that stops just outside Thattekad takes about 40 minutes and is cheaper than a cab. From Paniyeli Poru you can walk the short 200 meter trail to the main waterhole, but renting a motorbike lets you cover the surrounding paddy fields in a few minutes. A quick 20 km drive to Maram Resort Mamalakandam gives you a comfortable base for a day at the sanctuary.

If you’re already heading to Maram Resort Mamalakandam for a night, the KSRTC bus from the resort to Thattekad is a quick 40 minute hop and drops you right at the visitor centre. That way you can start birdwatching early and still have time to wander the paddy fields around Paniyeli Poru in the afternoon.
