If you’re leaving after sunset, remember the dam’s small cafeteria opens at 6 pm, so you can grab a quick snack before heading back. Also, the parking fee is ₹20 per vehicle, so have a few rupees ready. If you want a place to stay, JMC Hotel the Moon is just under 4 km from the dam and offers family rooms.

A good rule of thumb is to hit the beach early, around 10 a.m., when the waves have settled after the monsoon. The sunset around 6 p.m. is usually clear, but a light jacket helps against the evening breeze. If you’re staying near the beach, Hotel Winsar Park is a short drive away and still close to the Submarine Museum and Kailasagiri, making a day trip easy.

If you’re after a sunrise over the stupa, early October usually has clearer skies and a warmer morning, making the light softer for photos. In November the mornings can feel a touch cooler, but the crowds thin out and the air is crisp. Either way, staying at Hotel Gridhakuta International keeps you a short walk from the site and gives easy access to the town’s cafés.

If you’re heading to Techno Park in mid October, you’ll find mornings around 18 °C and evenings near 22 °C, with a few brief showers that clear by early afternoon. The sky is usually partly cloudy, giving a pleasant mix of sun and shade. At Dzukou Valley the same pattern holds, but the higher altitude keeps temperatures a bit cooler, so a light jacket is handy. A nearby option with good reviews is Niraamaya Retreats Aradura Kohima. Have you decided on a particular time of day you’d like to visit the park? You could also bring a lightweight waterproof blanket so the kids can sit dry while watching the falls. If you want a quieter activity after the walk, the garden play zone at Hotel Akanksha has a small splash pad that’s safe for little ones. Does anyone know the best time to avoid crowds? If you head out a little earlier, say 5:30 am, the stretch past Alagar Kovil is almost empty. From there you can take the side lane that skirts the main entrance of Pazhamudhircholai; it gives you a quieter angle for the carvings. Try shooting from the outer courtyard when the sun is low on the left, so the light cuts the stone and the crowds stay behind the entrance arch.

If you want a base that’s close enough to both spots, Maram Resort Mamalakandam is only about 20 km from Thattekad and gives you easy access to the sanctuary. From there you can catch a local KSRTC bus that stops right by the visitor centre, so you’ll be able to hit the birdwatching trail early and still have time to enjoy Paniyeli Poru in the afternoon.

If you’re curious about how the sea powered local livelihoods, the salt pans on Kurusadai are a tangible glimpse into that past. In Rameswaram you’ll find the Ramanathaswamy Temple’s 22,000 pillars, which also tell a story of maritime trade through the temple’s storied festivals. For a quick cultural detour after the island visit, the nearby town of Tirupati hosts the Pai Viceroy Hotel, a good spot to regroup.

If you’re already in Rishikesh, staying at ArtBuzz Rishikesh gives you a convenient base and you can drop by the temple on a short drive. In March the cooler air makes the trek easier, while October’s post monsoon green is nice but can feel sticky. Either way, a quick stop at Haridwar for the evening Ganga Aarti is easy to fit in before heading back.

If you’re looking for a quiet spot with a bit of extra charm, try the Collection O Aryan Address. It’s only about 600 m from the temple and offers a larger room layout than FabHotel. After a day of walking, you might want to try the Bihu Dhara on the opposite side of the street for a hearty fish curry and a local pitha. If you’re staying near the city centre, the Mohua Hotel gives you a quick taxi hop to Jagannath and then a short ride to Parnashakti, so you can finish both by evening without the long walk. That way you can enjoy the temples in one day and still have time for a relaxed dinner.

If you’re aiming to see the Dutch House museum first, plan about 45 minutes there, then stroll the lawns. The gardens are best in the early afternoon when the light hits the lawns and the crowds are lighter. From the palace a quick 20 minute walk takes you straight into Fort Kochi’s old quarter, where you can grab a coffee at the café near Marine Inn Hotel before heading back.

From Manikaran the easiest child friendly trek to Pin Parvati is to head south to the village of Kheerganga, then follow the Pin Parvati ridge. The first day can be a gentle walk from Manikaran to Kheerganga, staying in a small guest house. The next day you climb the ridge to the pass, which is well marked and not too steep. Early June keeps the weather drier, but by mid July the monsoon can bring showers, so plan to start by the 10th or 11th of June for the smoothest conditions. If you need a base camp near the pass, the Apple Orchard Resort in Dhanaulti is a good nearby option.

If you can spare a bit more than a quick stroll, the Punjab Cottages let you sit in a shaded courtyard for a few minutes and then you’re only a short walk from The Piccadily Hotel Chandigarh where you can grab a coffee before heading back. That extra five kilometres gives a calmer break without much extra travel time.

If you’re after a quick wildlife burst, head to Velavadar early in the morning blackbucks are most active around sunrise, and you’ll also catch a few wolves or hyenas in the late afternoon. The park’s 24 hour access lets you squeeze in a late night bird walk, too. After that, a short drive to Iscon The Fern Resort & Spa in Bhavnagar gives you a comfortable base without a long trek.
