If you’re staying at PPH Living KVR Residency, you can start early at Nelapattu for the guided walk and then head to Pulicat for a pedal boat ride after lunch. The lake’s larger size lets kids spot flamingos from the water, while the sanctuary’s 458 hectare wetlands give plenty of nesting sites for a quieter learning experience. A combined day keeps both sites within a short drive.

If you’re only stopping for a quick shot, the Chandra Peak viewpoint just before the turn to the Tungnath circuit gives a wide angle of the valley and the jagged peaks; it’s usually less crowded and the early morning light glows off the ridges. A brief walk to the Tungnath temple itself is worth the extra 10 minute trek the sunrise from the top of the hill is a classic shot. If you have a few more minutes, the trail to Chandrashila can be done in an hour and the panorama from the summit is unbeatable, especially in the golden hour.

A quick check shows the Poonch to Jammu bus departs roughly every hour, but the last run is usually around 8 pm. If you leave early from Jammu, a shared auto that stops at the temple entrance is often faster than a private cab, especially if you want to avoid the extra stop at the bus stand. If you’re looking to stay the next day, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa in Gulmarg is a convenient base.

You could also consider a quick auto from Baruva to the lighthouse that runs every 15 20 minutes, which makes it easy to fit a temple visit before sunset. If you stay at Sunray Village Resort, the auto link there is very reliable and you’ll be just a short ride from both the beach and the lighthouse. Does anyone know if the auto service runs past 9 pm?

If you’re looking for a bit more space and a quieter vibe while still being close to the museum, Four Points by Sheraton Ahmedabad is only about 3.6 km away. It’s within a short taxi ride to the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya and the Riverfront, and its rooms are larger than those at the smaller inns. That might give you a more relaxed stay without sacrificing convenience. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You might want to try the small cliff just before the Gun Hill turn off; the water rushes over a ledge there and the mist rises right above the rocks, giving a dramatic foreground. If you stay at Hotel Vishnu Palace you can hit that spot by sunrise with the valley light filtering through the trees. Does anyone know if the view is blocked by any temporary foliage in late spring?

If you’re staying at Neemrana’s Baradari Palace you’re already a half kilometre from Moti Bagh Palace, so a quick walk or the city bus from the station will drop you right outside the entrance. The palace has a small paid parking lot right outside the gates, which can be handy if you decide to drive. This way you can hit the gardens early in the morning or late in the evening when the crowds thin.

Start Day 1 by heading straight to the Tehri Dam for the kids’ first big sight. After lunch, spend the afternoon on a gentle boat ride on the reservoir most tours run from the dam’s jetty. On Day 2, drive to the old town ruins; the walk there takes about 30 minutes and the kids can explore the ancient temples. Day 3 can be a quick day trip to Rishikesh the trek from Tehri takes about two hours, and you’ll return in time for dinner. Finish Day 4 by relaxing at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti, which sits just a few kilometres from the dam and offers easy access to all the sites.

A quick tip is to use the 7 am shared auto from the main bus stand to Dhauli, then hop on the 10 am local bus to Lingaraj. From the temple a 10 minute auto will drop you near Khurda Fort by noon. If you need a place to stay after the day, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only 16 km away and easy to reach from the bus stand.

If you prefer staying closer to the gurdwaras, a quick 30 minute bus from Chandigarh’s bus stand to Rupnagar usually leaves at 07:00 and drops you near the station. From there a shared auto takes about ten minutes to the complex. Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh is only 11 km from the town centre, so you can catch morning prayers and stay in the same place for the evening processions.

If you’re landing at the bus stand, you can walk about 15 minutes to Sagarika Emporium and then another 12 minutes to the Cellular Jail. A quick taxi from the bus stand to the emporium would cut that to around 10 minutes, leaving a bit more room for a brief guided walk through the Jail’s museum. If you’re short on time, you could also stop at the TSG Grand for a quick coffee before heading back. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

A quick stop at the Baghmara Tea Estate on the way out gives a quieter walk before sunrise. On the return, you could visit the Neermahal Palace for a cultural break, then finish the day at Lake Side Resort Neermahal for a relaxed evening close to the hills. If you’re staying near the museum, the street stalls around the main road opposite the temple are a good spot for dhokla and khandvi. A short walk takes you to the seaside café on Prabhas Patan Beach where you can grab a fresh coconut water and a plate of local fish fry. The Hotel Aditya Mansingh Inn is within a kilometre, so you can easily step out for a quick bite before heading back to the museum.

If you get to Tip n Top around 4 pm it’s usually less crowded than the midday rush. The views are still great, but you’ll have to wait a bit for a good spot. If you’d rather skip the wait, a quick drive to Pithoragarh Fort gives another panoramic angle of the valley. And after that you could head to The Green Village Eco Resort in Jageshwar for a relaxed evening if you want to unwind.
