You might also want to check the small wooden altar that dates to the 1700s; it still holds a handful of prayer beads and sits right next to the main shrine. If you’re aiming to see the original 1701 layout, ask a local guide to show you the older prayer hall that predates the 1950s renovation. After that, a quick coffee at The Elgin Mount Pandim Pelling gives you a nice break before heading back to Yuksom.

If you only have a few hours, start at the Tlawng River because you can walk there from most city hotels in about 15 20 minutes. After a quick picnic or a few fish, a cab will take you up to Durtlang Hills in roughly 20 minutes, where the view is worth the short drive. If you’re staying at the Emerald Hotel you’ll be close to the river, so that saves a bit of walking time.

You can grab some banana chips and fresh mango slices at the stalls in Chalakkayam, but they close around noon. If you want a sit down bite before heading out, the market in Athirappilly has a good selection of fruit and quick snacks. For a more substantial meal you could stop at Niraamaya Retreats Samroha they serve a simple breakfast menu about 17 km from the dam.

The temple gate has a small museum that displays panels from the 8th century Chalukya period great for seeing how the iconography changed before the Vijayanagara additions. Afterward, a quick walk to the watchtowers in Kurnool lets you see the fortifications that once guarded the route.

You could also swing by the Gandhi Hill viewpoint right after the Prakasam Barrage the road to the hill is straight and you’ll get a quick 360 view before heading back. If you need a quick coffee break, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is only 300 metres from the museum entrance and has a nice terrace overlooking the city. This way you stay within the 12 km radius and avoid heavy traffic.

If you’re staying near the city, the Royal Lodging and fooding is about 2 km away, so you can hop out right after the morning rush and still be in the garden by 10 am. That way you’ll beat most visitors and have plenty of time to wander without the crowds.

If you’re already in Dimapur, a direct cab to Khomi Village is the simplest and usually takes 1½ 2 hours. Taking a bus to Kohima adds a stop and a second transfer, so it ends up longer overall. The train to Dimapur Railway Station is about an hour, but the cab from the station takes the same time as the direct route, so the total journey is similar. If you want a break in Kohima, staying at Niraamaya Retreats Aradura Kohima works nicely.

The bus stop for route 12 is just outside the city bus stand, so you can hop on right away. The fare is a few rupees, and the ride takes about ten minutes. If you prefer not to wait, a short cab hop would still be only a few minutes but costs a bit more.

I’ve heard that the cultural tour sometimes takes a short detour to a local fishing hamlet where the fishermen still use traditional nets. Do any of the guided walks include a stop there, or is it a separate excursion?

You could also try snorkeling at the southern reef right after sunset; the light makes the corals glow a bit. If you head to Agatti, the ferry back to Soochirac usually departs around 10 pm, so you’ll have a full evening on the island before the boat leaves. For the next day, a 6 am boat from Soochirac’s pier takes about 45 minutes to Bangaram, so you’ll get plenty of daylight to kayak once you arrive.

You might want to leave a bit of extra time for the Gurez road it passes through the village of Gurez where you can stop for a quick tea break and a photo of the valley. Weather in September can swing from clear mornings to short afternoon showers, so a waterproof bag and a light jacket are handy. If you need a place to rest near the trail, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa in Gulmarg is a popular choice.

You could also book a shared auto from the Rupnagar station right after the morning prayers; it takes about ten minutes to the gurdwara complex. If you want a quieter base, staying at Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh gives you free parking and easy access to the festival grounds.

The Thursday film shows at the Glasshouse finish around 7pm, so you can head straight to the Golden Temple and still catch its evening glow. If you want a quick rest afterward, the Best Western Kapurthala is a short drive away and offers decent rooms for a short stay.

There’s also a small stall a block east of the temple that sells *murukku* with a spicy tamarind chutney locals say it’s better than the version at Jagannath Market. If you want a sit down spot, FabHotel Amaltas is only about 0.75 km away and offers a few regional dishes. Let me know if you’d like the exact route.

If you’re taking the 45A, it runs roughly every 15 20 minutes during the day, so you can hop off and start running without a long wait. On weekends the frequency drops a bit, so catching it a few minutes early can save a few minutes of standing.
