Late Afternoon Arrival at Soochirac Island – What to Do Next?

Indrani Swaminathan · 1 month ago ·20 replies

I’ll be landing on Soochirac Island around 5 pm this September. The island is open 24 hours and entry is free, so I’m thinking about what to do right away. Would it be better to head to Agatti Island – about 10 km away – for sunset, or stay on Soochirac and explore the coral reefs a bit? Also, what transport is available for a day trip to Bangaram or Kadmat the next morning?

Since you’re landing at Soochirac, the easiest way to reach Bangaram or Kadmat the next day is to catch a local boat from the island’s pier. Operators usually run daily services to Bangaram, about 15 km away, and to Kadmat, roughly 20 km distant. The boats depart in the early morning so you can hop on a return trip by late afternoon. If you prefer a more scenic route, you could also head to Agatti first and then board a ferry from there; Agatti is only about 10 km from Soochirac and has more frequent departures. Either way, the water is calm in September and the coral reefs near Soochirac are still clear for a quick snorkel before you leave.

If you head to Agatti around sunset you’ll catch a beautiful low angle light over the lagoon, and the pier there has a few cafes that open late, so you can grab a snack. If you stay on Soochirac you can hop on a quick snorkel around the northern reef right before dark; the water stays clear in September, and you can see colorful fish right off the beach. For the next morning, a local boat from Soochirac’s pier runs to Bangaram about 15 km away, usually leaving around 6 am, so you can return by early afternoon.

If you decide to stay on Soochirac, you could head to the northern reef right before dark; the water is still clear in September and you’ll see plenty of fish. For the next morning, you can book a local boat at the Soochirac pier that leaves at about 6 am for Bangaram and returns by 2 pm. It’s usually a good idea to confirm the departure time and ticket price a few hours before you plan to go.

If you’re up for a quick sunset, the Agatti pier’s cafés stay open until about 10 pm, so you can grab a bite after the light fades. On Soochirac, a short snorkel around the northern reef takes only 30 minutes before dark, giving you a taste of the coral before you head to the pier for the next day’s boat.

You might also check the pier schedule on Agatti the last ferry back to Soochirac usually leaves around 10 pm, so you can stay a bit longer after sunset if you want.

If you’re staying on Soochirac, the northern reef is best seen just before dark when the light is still bright enough for clear visibility. The tide usually falls around 6 pm, so you’ll have a good window for a short snorkel before heading to the pier. If you head to Agatti for sunset, the pier’s cafés stay open until about 10 pm, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a late snack after the light fades. For the next day, remember that the local boat to Bangaram departs at 6 am, so it’s wise to confirm the exact time and ticket price a few hours before you plan to go.

Agatti’s pier has a small café that stays open until about 10 pm, so you can grab a quick bite after the sunset. On Soochirac you could do a 30 minute snorkel at the northern reef before dark, which gives a quick glimpse of the coral without waiting for the pier to open. This way you get both a sunset view and a taste of the underwater world in the same evening.

You could also try snorkeling at the southern reef right after sunset; the light makes the corals glow a bit. If you head to Agatti, the ferry back to Soochirac usually departs around 10 pm, so you’ll have a full evening on the island before the boat leaves. For the next day, a 6 am boat from Soochirac’s pier takes about 45 minutes to Bangaram, so you’ll get plenty of daylight to kayak once you arrive.

Since Bangaram is only about 15 km away, the early morning boat gives you a full day for kayaking once you arrive. You’ll find a few local guides there who can rent kayaks, so you can paddle around the lagoon and spot turtles before heading back. If you’re looking for a quick reef check before sunset, the northern reef off Soochirac is still clear in September and only a short swim from the beach.

If you’re already on Soochirac, you could try the northern reef right before dark just a short swim from the beach and it still looks great in September. That way you get a quick snorkel and still have time to head to the pier for the early morning boat to Bangaram or Kadmat.

If you head to Agatti for sunset, the ferry back to Soochirac usually leaves around 10 pm, so you can stay a little longer after the lights dim. That gives you a full evening on Soochirac to check the northern reef before heading to the pier for the next day’s boat.

You might also consider renting a kayak in Bangaram once you arrive. The island has a few local guides that offer short paddles around the lagoon, letting you spot turtles and see the coral gardens up close before heading back. This adds a different activity to your morning trip and gives you a chance to explore the water on your own time.

Agatti is only about ten kilometres away, so you can reach it by a quick 20 minute boat ride. The pier there has a small café that stays open until about ten in the evening, so you can grab a bite after the sunset view. If you prefer to stay on Soochirac, the northern reef is just a short swim from the beach and still looks clear in September. Either way you’ll get a good mix of land and sea before heading to the pier for the next day’s boat. Have you checked the exact departure times for the Agatti to Soochirac ferry?
