If you’re aiming for a brisk visit, the cooler October or November months mean the river will look especially clear and the walk around Umrangso is easier. The evenings stay pleasant, so you can still enjoy a short detour to Haflong Lake before heading back. If you prefer a bit more daylight and can tolerate occasional showers, March or April works fine and you’ll hit the town just as the greens start to bloom.

You can also visit the small Chaitya Buddha Stupa on the hilltop; it’s open all day and the path from the ridge is a quick walk. If you’re only there for a few hours, the Sakyamuni Monastery on the ridge opens at nine and stays until five, so you’ll have plenty of time to see a brief afternoon prayer. A convenient base to start from is Hotel Bodhi Retreat By Basotel, which is only a few kilometres away. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you want a quick sit down after the stalls, the TSG Grand’s small dining area is only a few hundred metres away. They serve fresh fish curry with coconut rice and have a kids menu, so the whole family can enjoy a local bite without a long walk.

You might also find a small stall on the western side of the market that sells boiled millet with fermented fish. Locals say it’s only about 150 MMK. If you’re heading back to the bus stop, the corner tea stall near the bus stand offers a quick fried rice plate for just a few hundred. A quick stop at Hotel Dinthar Zara’s café could give you a light snack if you prefer a bit more comfort.

If you only have a few hours, the quickest detour is Shringa Rishi Temple just a 10 minute drive from Banjar and you can spend about 45 minutes there. For a bit more nature, head east on NH5 to the Great Himalayan National Park entrance, park near the viewpoint, and walk a short loop in about 90 minutes. The same NH5 route lets you return to Banjar without detours, keeping the round trip under three hours. If you’re staying nearby, Madpackers Jibhi is a convenient base.

A good tip is to bring a small water bottle and a light, breathable shirt. The gardens have plenty of shade, so you can walk at a relaxed pace without feeling too hot. If you want a nearby place to rest, Hotel Yaiphaba is just over a kilometre away and offers comfortable rooms for a quick break. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could plan about 90 minutes inside Marble Palace 45 minutes for the marble halls, 20 for the sculpture gallery and 15 for the small private zoo. After that a 15 minute walk takes you to Victoria Memorial, and if you’re staying at Hotel 16 avenue the walk is only half a kilometre. From there a quick metro hop to Howrah Bridge gives a good photo stop before you head back.

If you’re already near the station, a taxi is quickest about ten minutes. The bus from Dehradun Bus Stand takes 20 25 minutes because it stops at the bus stand first and then makes a few hops. If you prefer a short walk and still want a taxi, the Vishnu Lok near the station is just a 110 meter walk away.

If you’re staying at ARTILLA INN, you can hit the Artist Village right after check in. The main workshop that day is scheduled for 4 pm, so you’ll still have a couple of hours to explore the key exhibitions before the evening art talk starts around 7 pm. After that, a quick 15 minute walk takes you to Sabarmati Ashram for sunset.

You might also consider dropping your bags at KC Residency first, then walking the 0.7 km to Peer Kho. From there you can head straight to Raghunath Temple and finish at Bahu Fort, keeping the whole loop under an hour. If you’re worried about parking at Bahu Fort, the main gate has a small lot that usually fills by noon, so arriving a bit earlier could save a search.

Since the Japanese Garden is open 24 hours, you could stroll there first and then hop on a short taxi to Sukhna Lake for the sunset about a 5 minute ride. From there, a quick drive to the Golden Temple will get you in before the 8 pm service. If you need a quick break, staying at Tulip Inn Zirakpur keeps both spots within a ten minute drive.

Kurusadai also hosts old salt pans and a small 17th century Dutch fort ruin that hint at early maritime trade. Rameswaram, meanwhile, is home to the Ramanathaswamy Temple’s 22,000 pillar hall, a key pilgrimage route. If you’re keen on seeing how the sea shaped local livelihoods, start with Kurusadai; for a deeper dive into myth and temple architecture, Rameswaram will be richer. Which angle interests you more?

October is great for clear water and drier trails. The sunset over the lake gives soft light for long exposures, and the lower visitor numbers mean you can roam the paths without crowds. Try the loop around the western shore it offers sharp mountain reflections and a few scenic viewpoints. If you need a base, the Vatsyayana A Himalayan Boutique Resort has a quiet spot by the river that’s perfect for early morning shots.

October temperatures around 20 25 °C should keep a sunset stroll comfortable. From Birsa Munda Airport you’d head south to Ranchi, then east toward Uljhawan. The drive to the Uljhawan bus stop is roughly 35 km, about 45 50 minutes depending on traffic. Staying at the Bloom Hotel Ranchi gives you a convenient base a short drive from the airport.

You could also try a quick 15 minute boat hop right after sunset; the lights on the ghats turn on around 6:30 pm, so you’ll catch the lantern display at Jwalamalini as you return. Does anyone know if the boat service runs that late on weekdays?
