The Mahabalipuram bus stand sits about 2.5 km from the Five Rathas, so a local bus or auto can get you there in roughly ten minutes. Chengalpattu railway station is around 12 km away; the last Chennai to Chengalpattu trains leave just before 6 pm, so if you arrive at 4 pm a taxi is still the quickest way to avoid missing the final departures.
