How to reach Lonavala Lake on a budget from Pune?

Aniket Mahajan · 4 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a quick trip to Lonavala Lake from Pune and want to keep costs low. Since the lake is open all day and free to enter, the main expense is travel. What is the cheapest way to get from Pune International Airport to Lonavala Lake-by bus, train or a shared cab? Also, once at Lonavala Railway Station, how far is the lake and is the local bus a good option?

The cheapest way is to take the Pune Airport Pune City bus to the Pune Railway Station and then catch a local train to Lonavala. From the Lonavala Railway Station the lake is about a 15 minute walk or a short local bus ride. The local 12A bus runs every 20 30 minutes and takes you straight to the lake entrance, so you can keep the trip very budget friendly.

You could also take the Pune Airport Pune City bus to Pune Railway Station and then board a local train to Lonavala. From the station the lake is only a 15 minute walk. If you prefer a bus, the 12A runs every 20 30 minutes and drops you near the lake entrance, so you can keep the whole trip very cheap.

The 12A bus from Lonavala station stops right at the lake entrance, so you can just hop off and walk a few minutes. The walk takes about ten minutes and is a pleasant stroll through the pine trees. If you want to avoid walking, you can catch a local autorickshaw from the station; they are cheap and usually available within a few minutes.

If you skip the train and go straight from the airport to Lonavala in a shared cab, the fare usually lands around ₹200 ₹250, which is still cheaper than a full bus train combo. The cab drops you near the Lonavala Railway Station, and from there the lake is just a ten minute walk or a quick 12A local bus hop.

A quick tip: if you end up near the station, the 12A bus stops right at the lake entrance, so you can skip the walk entirely. If you’d rather stay close to the lake, the Metropole By Key Board Hotels is only about 800 metres away, making it a convenient base for a quick overnight or a day break. Does anyone know if the 12A runs late into the evening?

The 12A usually runs until about 10 pm, so you can catch it even after sunset. If you want a quick drop near the lake, the Metropole By Key Board Hotels is only a 100 meter walk from the station and a short bus hop.

If you’re okay with a bit of walking, the 12A bus is the most economical after the train. It drops you right at the lake entrance, so you avoid an extra autorickshaw. If you’d rather stay close to the water, the Metropole By Key Board Hotels is only about 80 metres from the station and offers a cheap stay for a quick overnight.

You could also grab a shared cab straight from the airport; it usually drops you near Lonavala station in about 45 minutes for roughly ₹200 ₹250. From the station the 12A bus stops right at the lake entrance, so you avoid any extra walking or rickshaw fare. The 12A runs until about 10 pm, which is handy if you want to stay out past sunset. If you prefer a quick lift instead of a bus, a local autorickshaw from the station will get you there in about five minutes for just a few rupees.
