Transport options from Chennai airport to Five Rathas early in the morning

Tariq Joshi · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’ll be arriving at Chennai International Airport around 4 am and need to get to the Five Rathas. Is it better to grab a cab right away, or are there buses or trains that run early enough? The site is open all day and entry is free, so timing isn’t a problem once I’m there. Also, how far is the Mahabalipuram Bus Stand and Chengalpattu Railway Station from the temples, and can I catch a train or bus to them at that hour?

The Mahabalipuram bus stand is roughly 2.5 km from the Five Rathas, so a local bus or auto will get you there in about 10 12 minutes. Chengalpattu railway station is a bit farther, around 12 km away, and the nearest train to the temple area runs only a couple of times a day; the last departure from Chennai at 18:30 would be too late. A taxi or app based cab from the airport is the quickest and most reliable option after 16:00.

A quick taxi from the airport takes you straight to the Five Rathas in about 30 minutes. If you prefer public transport, you can catch a city bus from the airport to Chennai Central, then transfer to a bus heading to Mahabalipuram. Those buses run roughly every 30 45 minutes in the late afternoon, so you’ll still get there in about 90 minutes. Chengalpattu station is farther; the last Chennai to Chengalpattu trains leave around 6 pm, so a taxi is the safest bet if you want to get there after 4 pm.

If you’re looking for a quick option, an app based cab from the airport takes about 30 minutes straight to the Five Rathas. If you prefer public transport, you can catch a city bus from the airport to Chennai Central, then hop on a Mahabalipuram bound bus that leaves roughly every 30 45 minutes in the late afternoon. Chengalpattu trains usually depart later in the evening, so a taxi is the safest choice after 4 pm.

If you’re okay with a bit of walking, you can take a local bus from the airport to the Chennai Central bus station and then hop on a 48 type bus that heads straight to Mahabalipuram. Those buses run roughly every 45 minutes after 4 pm, so you’ll be at the temple complex in about an hour and a half. The Chengalpattu train line only has a few departures before 6 pm, so a taxi is still the safest bet if you want to be there earlier.

The airport bus service to Chennai Central starts around 5 pm and runs every 20 30 minutes, so you could catch that and then hop on a Mahabalipuram bound bus. If you want a quicker, no wait option, a quick cab from the airport takes roughly 30 minutes straight to the Five Rathas. By the way, if you’re staying near the temples, the HAYATHI INN is only a few hundred metres away.

If you’re staying near the temples, you could stay at the HAYATHI INN it’s only a few hundred metres away and gives you a quick walk to the Five Rathas. The bus stand is about 2.5 km, the railway station around 12 km. Late afternoon city buses run every 30 45 minutes, but the last Chennai to Chengalpattu train leaves just before 6 pm, so a taxi after 4 pm is still the safest bet.
