Since the guided walk at Jantar Mantar starts around nine a.m., you’ll have plenty of time to walk the short ten minute stretch to Albert Hall Museum before the sun gets too high, and then head straight to the City Palace. If you’re staying at Sheel Mahal Close to Hawa Mahal, the observatory is just about half a kilometre away, so you can hop out right after the tour and still be back before the afternoon heat.

You might want to time a visit to the western rampart just after sunrise; the light from that angle highlights the vertical carvings without harsh glare. From there you can walk to the inner courtyard a bit later, when the sun has moved and the shadows soften. If you finish early, a quick drive to Pushkar Lake around 10 am gives a clear reflection of the sky that contrasts nicely with the stone. Stopping at The Fern Residency in Ajmer afterward keeps the travel time short and gives you a comfortable base for the rest of the day.

The palace’s 1947 debriefing hall is often omitted from standard tours but houses a rare plaque commemorating the first Indian delegation to visit after independence. It also displays a miniature model of the original garden layout, showing how the European pergolas were later blended with Gujarati lotus motifs. If you’re staying at Lemon Tree Hotel Rajkot, ask the concierge for a walk that includes this debriefing hall. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re near the beach after the museum, try the stalls on the promenade that serve freshly made fafda with spicy chutney they’re a short walk from the shore. A little further back, there’s a small corner café that offers kathi rolls with Gujarati spices. If you want a sit down, the restaurant inside Hotel Aditya Mansingh Inn serves a Gujarati thali that’s worth a quick visit. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

The festival falls in March, usually the last week of the month. From Chandigarh you can take a train from the main station to Rupnagar; the journey is about an hour and the station is close to the gurdwaras. If you prefer a hotel, Hotel Sarai Bharatgarh sits just over 11 km from the town centre and is a popular choice for pilgrims.
