If you’re mainly after the main stupa and the western carvings, a 4 pm arrival will give you that golden glow before dusk. The site stays quiet after the midday rush, so you can stroll through the northern gate and then head south to the lesser known vihara cluster before it starts to dim. If you’d like a full day view in daylight, staying overnight at Hotel O Saket Homes in Bhubaneswar and coming back early tomorrow is a good backup plan.
