If you’re staying at Jai Mahal Palace, you can hop out and walk to Kote Gate in about fifteen minutes. The market opens around 6 a.m.; the first stalls are the hand loom cotton and silk shops right inside the main gate, while the spice corner near the bazaar square is famous for fresh garam masala and cumin. An early morning walk gives you the quietest crowds and the freshest aromas.

You could also ask the temple office to point out the stone slabs at the base of the main sanctum they bear Prakrit inscriptions from the Satavahana and Ikshvaku eras. After that, a short drive to the old watchtowers in Kurnool shows how the Vijayanagara style protected the route to Srisailam. If you’re staying in Bangalore, The Oberoi Bengaluru offers a quiet retreat after a day of exploring.

If you’re heading from the airport, a quick auto to the lighthouse then a 20 minute walk to Mandvi Beach keeps you out of the midday heat. If you want a quieter start, reverse the order and hit the beach first; the walk takes about 25 minutes. A stop at Kokanwadi Resort in Dhokamale for coffee before you go can break up the walk nicely.

A good trick is to aim for 3:30 4:00 am. The mist clears a bit earlier than most people expect, so you’ll see more birds and deer moving into the fields. If you’re staying at Hyatt Place Bodh Gaya, the 3:45 am bus will drop you close enough to hit the sanctuary right as it opens. Do you plan to stay that early or prefer a later start?

If you’re coming from Srikakulam Road Station, the state bus service runs a route that stops near Baruva every couple of hours. You can catch that bus to the lighthouse area and then hop on a local auto for the final stretch to the beach. The bus ride takes about an hour and the fare is nominal. If you prefer a bit more comfort, Dolphin Hotel in Visakhapatnam is a good base; it offers a shuttle that can pick you up from the station and drop you near the beach. This setup lets you fit the beach, lighthouse, and a quick Kalingapatnam stop into a single day. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you go after the third week of September, the trail is very light. The guides are often free to walk at a relaxed pace and you’ll see only a handful of trekkers near the village. Staying at Hotel Batseri in Sangla gives you easy access and a quiet base while the area stays calm.

The power station itself has a small visitor centre with displays on the plant and a few photo spots right by the turbine hall. If you’re looking for something a bit different, a quick 10 minute drive brings you to the nearby Kothagudem village market where you can try local street food and buy a few handicrafts. It’s a low key way to stretch your legs before heading back to the road.

You might want to bring a lightweight monopod instead of a big tripod the course staff usually frown on large rigs on the greens. If you’re staying near the palace, the President Hotel is a short walk away and has a good parking spot for a quick break before you head back out.
