In winter the trail is usually clear but can get misty early in the morning, so start early to avoid fog. The 15 km stretch to Hidlumane Waterfalls can be done after the descent, but bring a light jacket because temperatures drop at night. If you’re staying near the base, consider a place like Hotel Ambika International Byndoor for easy access to the temple and the trek.

The equinoxes fall around March 20 21 and September 22 23, so the sun rises just before those dates. Arrive about 30 minutes early to catch the light hitting the stone façade. From Ahmedabad, drive east on NH 27 for roughly 1½ hours.

I’m planning a trekking trip to Kodachadri and also want to visit the nearby Mookambika Temple and Hidlumane Waterfalls. Kodachadri sits in the Shimoga district at 13.8667°N, 74.8333°E and is open 24 hours. The temple…
