The main shrine was originally carved in the 11th century Chola period, but the current complex grew under the Vijayanagara reign in the 16th century, with the gopuram finished by the Nayakas. A quick way to see the layers is to walk the 1,200 steps to the main sanctum and note the Pallava style pilasters on the outer walls. If you need a break, the Marasa Sarovar Premiere Tirupati is only about eight kilometres away and offers quick access to the temple area.
