When’s the best season to visit Mon Town if I land early morning?

Bilal Kapur · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’ll be arriving at Dimapur Airport early in the morning and want to head straight to Mon Town. The town is open 24 hours, so I could start the day early. Given the Konyak culture and the Aoling festival in April, I’m trying to figure out which month would give me the richest experience. Also, would it be better to arrive in March or October, or is there a particular season that’s cooler and less crowded?

April is the peak for the Aoling festival, so you’ll see the most colorful processions and cultural performances then. If you prefer fewer crowds and milder temperatures, March or October are good choices; March is still warm but the rains haven’t started, and October is the start of the dry season with pleasant evenings. A convenient base in Dimapur is The Layover Hotel, which is close to the airport and has easy access to the road to Mon Town.

Mon Town is only about 20 kilometres from Dimapur, so you can hop on a taxi right after landing. If you want a comfortable start, staying at The Layover Hotel gives you easy airport access and a quick drive to the town. For a quieter visit, consider heading in early October when the monsoon winds die down and the streets are less crowded. Have you checked the local market schedule for that time?

If you’re aiming for the most vibrant Aoling celebrations, April is the spot. But if you’d rather avoid the peak crowds and still enjoy a pleasant climate, early October works well the monsoon winds settle and evenings stay cool. Staying at The Layover Hotel gives you a quick taxi hop to Mon Town and a comfortable base before the festival crowds swell. Also, check the local market’s weekly schedule; it’s usually busiest on Thursdays and Saturdays.

If you’re heading straight from the airport, a taxi to Mon Town takes about 30 minutes. The town’s market is busiest on Thursdays and Saturdays, so you’ll catch more stalls and traders then. Staying at The Layover Hotel keeps you close to the airport and gives you a quick hop to Mon Town before the market rush. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re heading in early October, the evening temperatures usually drop to the low 20s Celsius, making it easier to walk around Mon Town. Just before the market opens on Thursday, you’ll find the stalls already lined up, so arriving around 7 am lets you catch the first vendors.

The market in Mon Town usually opens around 8 am and peaks on Thursdays and Saturdays, so if you want to beat the crowd head out before 7 am. A quick taxi from The Layover Hotel will get you there in about 30 minutes.

If you’re aiming for the festival’s full energy, April is the only month when the Aoling parade is in full swing. For a quieter, cooler experience you can still hit the market early in March before the rains kick in, or in early October when the monsoon tails off and evenings dip into the low 20s. A quick taxi from The Layover Hotel gets you to Mon Town in about half an hour.

If you’re aiming for a quieter market run, try heading out on a Tuesday or Wednesday in early October the stalls open around 8 am and the crowds are lighter. The Layover Hotel’s taxi service will drop you off in about 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to explore before the evening rush.

If you want to beat the Thursday rush, leave Dimapur before 7 am. A quick taxi from The Layover Hotel gets you to Mon Town in about 30 minutes, and the market opens at 8 am, so you’ll see the stalls fresh and the crowds still light. This timing works well in early October when evenings stay cool and the festival crowds are still building.

If you’re aiming for the full Aoling parade, April is the only time it’s on. For a quieter, cooler visit, early October works well monsoon winds die off and evenings stay in the low 20s. If you want to avoid the Thursday rush, leave Dimapur before 7am; a taxi from The Layover Hotel takes about 30 minutes and you’ll hit Mon Town before the market opens at 8am.

The market in Mon Town opens at 8 am, so if you want to avoid the Thursday rush, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday in early October. That way the stalls are freshly set up and the crowd is lighter. Does anyone know if the Aoling parade starts early in the morning that day?
