What’s a good day route for a solo traveler in Vijayawada?

Tariq Joshi · 1 month ago ·22 replies

I’m a solo traveler planning a one‑day trip to Vijayawada and I’d like to cover the key sights efficiently. The city is open 24 hours, and entry to most temples and caves is free. I’d start near the airport or the city centre – what would be the most logical sequence? I’d like to see Undavalli Caves (about 6 km away), Prakasam Barrage (3 km), and the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri Hill. Any tips on the best order and transport between them?

Start at the airport, head to Undavalli Caves first it’s only about 6 km away and you’ll avoid the later traffic. From there, drive to Prakasam Barrage, which is a quick 3 km hop and gives a nice river view. Finish the day by climbing Indrakeeladri Hill to reach the Kanaka Durga Temple; the hill road is straightforward and you’ll have the sunset over the city. If you need a place to stay, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is close to the airport and the city centre. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

A quick way to hit all three spots is to start at the airport, head straight to Undavalli Caves, then drive to Prakasam Barrage, and finish up with the hill climb to Kanaka Durga. The road from the caves to the barrage is a short 3 km stretch, and the hill road is a single lane with a few turns you’ll get a nice view of the city as you ascend. If you’re looking for a nearby place to drop your bags before heading out, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is just 0.3 km from the airport.

A quick tip: the road from Prakasam Barrage to Indrakeeladri Hill goes through the Kurnool Bhimavaram Highway, which can get a bit busy after 4 pm. If you leave the barrage around 3:30 pm, you’ll reach the temple before the evening rush and still catch the sunset from the hill.

If you’re heading out from the airport, consider dropping your bags at the Capital O Siddartha Grand first. From there you can catch a quick taxi or ride share to Undavalli Caves, then hop to Prakasam Barrage, and finish with the climb to Kanaka Durga. The hill road has a few sharp bends, so a local guide or a pre booked ride can help you avoid getting stuck in traffic when the sunset starts.

A good tweak is to hit the Kanaka Durga Temple first if you’re leaving from the airport in the morning. The hill road is clear before 10 am, so you can enjoy the climb without rush. After the temple, head south to Undavalli Caves, then finish at Prakasam Barrage. If you need a place to drop bags before the hike, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is only a few minutes away from the airport.

You could start at the airport, drop your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand, then head to Undavalli Caves. From there a quick 3 km drive takes you to Prakasam Barrage, and after a short break you can climb Indrakeeladri Hill for the temple and sunset. The hill road is single lane but clear before 10 am, so you’ll avoid later traffic.

You could drop your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand first. From there a short ride to Undavalli Caves takes about 15 minutes, then a quick 3 km drive to Prakasam Barrage. After a quick break you can head up the hill to Kanaka Durga. If you leave the barrage around 3:30 pm you’ll beat the late afternoon traffic and still catch the sunset from the temple.

A quick tip: after you finish the hill climb, the road back to the city centre goes through the main bus stand, so you can drop your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand before heading back. If you’re leaving the barrage around 3:30 pm, you’ll beat the late afternoon traffic and still catch the sunset from the temple.

If you’re heading out right after dropping your bags at the Capital O Siddartha Grand, try stopping at the Prakasam Barrage first for a quick photo op of the Krishna River. From there you can head to the Undavalli Caves, which are a short drive and a good warm up before the hill climb. The hill road gets a bit busy after 4 pm, so leaving the barrage around 3:30 pm keeps you on schedule and lets you catch the sunset at Kanaka Durga. If you’re leaving the airport after a quick drop off at Capital O Siddartha Grand, you could first head to the Prakasam Barrage for a quick photo stop, then drive to Undavalli Caves, and finish with the hill climb to Kanaka Durga. The road from the caves to the barrage is only about 3 km and the hill road stays clear before 10 am, so you’ll avoid the late afternoon rush.

After a short break at the barrage, head up the hill road to Kanaka Durga; the climb takes about 30 minutes and you’ll reach the temple around sunset for a nice view. You could start by dropping your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand, then head straight to Undavalli Caves. After a quick visit, a 3 km drive gets you to Prakasam Barrage for a river photo break. From there, take the hill road to Kanaka Durga; it’s a single lane but clear before 10 am, so you’ll hit the temple before sunset. This order keeps the traffic low and gives you a nice progression from caves to river to hilltop.

You could start at the airport, drop your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand, then head straight to Undavalli Caves. From there a quick 3 km drive takes you to Prakasam Barrage, where you can pause for a river photo before climbing Indrakeeladri Hill. A local auto rickshaw or taxi will get you up the hill and you’ll reach the Kanaka Durga Temple just in time for sunset.

You could also stop for a quick break at the parking lot near the temple before heading up the hill. The lot opens around 9 am and is free, so you can rest a bit and avoid the rush on the steep road. After you climb, you’ll get a good view of the city before sunset. If you need a place to drop luggage, Capital O Siddartha Grand is a short walk from the airport. You might want to stop at the free parking near the temple that opens at 9 am. It lets you rest before the steep climb and keeps you out of the later rush on the single lane hill road. After the temple you can head back toward the city centre and drop your bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand before heading out again.

You could start at the airport, drop bags at Capital O Siddartha Grand, then head to Undavalli Caves. Since the caves open at 8 am, you’ll get a quieter visit before the 3 km drive to Prakasam Barrage. From there, a quick 30 minute ride up the hill will get you to Kanaka Durga before sunset. Have you checked the local bus schedule to the caves?

If you’re heading straight from the airport, a quick stop at the free parking lot near the temple that opens at 9 am can give you a breather before the steep climb. After the temple, you could take a local bus or auto to the caves, which open at 8 am and are quieter early. The Capital O Siddartha Grand is a short walk from the airport if you want to drop luggage before the bus ride.
