What to do at Buddhist Excavation Site at Langudi Hill when passing through Odisha?

Sagnik Gautam · 1 week ago ·17 replies

The site is free to enter and stays open 24 hours, so I can visit at any time. It’s full of ancient stupas and rock‑cut sculptures, with Brahmi inscriptions that hint at the early spread of Buddhism. The view from the hill is panoramic and the atmosphere feels very serene. When I’m on a quick route through Odisha, I’d love to know what activities are most worthwhile there. Also, are there any nearby spots I could squeeze in for a brief visit?

If you’re already on the way to Bhubaneswar, a quick detour to the Udayagiri Caves is worth it. The rock cut Buddhist and Hindu carvings are about 30 km from the city and can be visited in a few hours. After that you could head back to the hill site and then stop at the Jagannath Temple complex, which is only a short drive away and offers a lively local atmosphere. If you need a place to stay, the Mayfair Lagoon Hotel in Bhubaneswar is highly rated and close to both sites.

Since you’re already heading toward Bhubaneswar, you could stop at the Udayagiri Caves first they’re just about 30 km from the city and give a good taste of the rock cut artistry. From there, after you climb the hill for the panoramic view, a quick detour to the Jagannath Temple complex is easy and lets you experience the local vibe. If you need a place to rest, the Mayfair Lagoon Hotel is close to both spots and has good reviews.

If you have a bit of extra time after the hill, a quick walk down to the nearby Gopabandhu Park gives a nice break from the rocks. The park has a small temple and a few pavilions that are easy to explore on foot. If you need a place to rest after that, the Mayfair Lagoon Hotel is a comfortable option close to both the hill and the city center.

If you have a few extra minutes after the hill, consider stopping at the nearby Gopabandhu Park. It has a small temple and a few pavilions that are easy to walk around, giving a nice break from the rock scenery. After that, you could head back to the hill for sunset if the timing works, or drop by the Jagannath Temple complex for a quick glimpse of the local devotion. If you need a place to rest, the Mayfair Lagoon Hotel is a comfortable option close to both spots.

If you’re only able to squeeze in a quick stop, the Lingaraj Temple is a short drive from the hill and offers a lively atmosphere and impressive architecture. After that, you could head back up for sunset, or if you want a quiet break, visit the nearby Gopabandhu Park. If you need a place to stay, Mayfair Lagoon Hotel is close to both the hill and the city center.

If you’re up for a quick sunrise, the hill opens early and the light on the stupas is spectacular. A short walk down after that can take you to the Gopabandhu Park, where you can relax in the shade before heading back to Bhubaneswar.
