Weekend family trip to Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall – is it worth it?

Ishaan Mahapatra · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

Thinking about a quick weekend trip for the family to Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall in Kerala. The place is open all day and entry is free, and October is listed as a good month for visiting. We can get there by cab from the Aruvikkuzhi Bus Stop or drive from Cochin International Airport. Do you think the waterfall and its surroundings, like the nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary or Vembanad Lake, make a nice family outing?

You could stay at the Royale Park right next to the waterfall; it’s only a 5 minute walk from the parking at Aruvikkuzhi. The kids will love the easy access to the falls and the nearby bird sanctuary, and the hotel has a small pool that’s good for a quick dip after the hike. If you’re planning to visit Vembanad Lake, the same hotel offers a short shuttle ride to the lake’s backwaters.

Sounds like a solid plan. The falls are best in the morning light, and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is only a short walk away, so kids can see birds and water in one trip. If you want a place to unwind after the hike, staying at Royale Park keeps you right next to the waterfall and gives easy access to a quick dip in the hotel pool. Have you thought about timing your visit to catch the early evening backwater view at Vembanad?

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is only a few minutes’ walk from the falls, so you can combine a quick bird watching walk with the waterfall hike. If you’re staying near the falls, you can head back to the hotel pool for a splash before heading out to Vembanad for the sunset backwater view. Have you checked the exact shuttle times to the lake from your accommodation?

You could also grab a short boat ride from the Kumarakom side of the backwaters to see the sunset over Vembanad. The boat departures start around 5 pm, giving a nice window after the falls visit. If you’re staying near the falls, the same hotel can arrange a quick shuttle to the lake at that time.

Since the falls open all day, plan to arrive around 8 am so the mist is still fresh and the kids can see the birds before they get too busy. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary has a short walk from the falls, so you can finish the hike and then walk to the sanctuary for a quick bird watching session. After that, a short drive back to your hotel Royale Park is just a minute from the parking lets the kids splash in the pool before heading out for Vembanad’s sunset.

If you’re staying at Royale Park, the shuttle to Vembanad is a quick 10 minute drive, and you can catch the sunset from the backwaters right after the waterfall hike. Also, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary has a small guided walk that shows kids the common kingfisher and heron, which is a nice contrast to the roaring falls. Have you looked into the best time to leave the falls to hit the lake before dusk?

If you’re staying near the falls, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offers a short guided walk that spots kingfishers and herons good for kids who like birds. After the walk, a quick 10 minute drive from Royale Park can take you to Vembanad for a sunset backwater view. This keeps the day packed but still relaxed.

If you’re staying at Royale Park, you can hop on a 10 minute shuttle to Vembanad after the falls. The backwaters are especially calm in October, so a late afternoon boat ride gives the kids a chance to spot dolphins and see the sunset over the lake. Does anyone know the exact shuttle departure times for that time of year?

If you’re staying at Royale Park, the backwater shuttle departs around 5 pm, which lines up nicely with the sunset over Vembanad. That timing gives the kids a chance to spot the usual kingfishers and maybe a dolphin or two before the lights go down. You might want to ask the hotel staff for the exact departure window for October.

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary usually starts guided walks around 9 am, so you could hit the falls first and then catch a short walk to spot kingfishers before lunch. If you book a room at Royale Park, the staff can help line up the shuttle to Vembanad right after the walk. Does anyone know if the backwater boat departures shift a bit later in October?

The falls are especially misty around 8 am, so getting there early gives the kids a clearer view before the trail gets busier. If you stay at Royale Park you can drop the kids off at the parking, walk to the falls in about ten minutes, then head back for a quick splash in the hotel pool before heading out for Vembanad. Also, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary opens at 9 am, so you can fit a short bird watching walk right after the waterfall before lunch.

A quick stop at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary right after the falls lets the kids see kingfishers and herons up close before the afternoon heat. If you’re staying at Royale Park, the hotel can arrange a 10 minute shuttle to Vembanad around 5 pm, so you catch the sunset on the backwaters without a long drive.

A quick walk from the falls leads to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, and the kids can spot kingfishers right before lunch. If you stay at Royale Park, the hotel can arrange a 10 minute shuttle that leaves around 5 pm, lining up nicely with the sunset over Vembanad. That way you get a short boat ride and a relaxed finish after the hike. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.
