Weather at Kharsali vs Dehradun for a Quick Trip in October

Vaidehi Jani · 1 week ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a short visit in October and I’m torn between Kharsali and Dehradun. Kharsali is listed as a good destination in May, June, September, and October, so it sounds weather‑friendly. Dehradun is lower in altitude and usually warmer, but I haven’t seen a side‑by‑side comparison. Which place offers a cooler, more pleasant climate for a limited‑time trip this month?

Kharsali sits higher than Dehradun, so in October it usually stays a few degrees cooler and feels more crisp. Dehradun’s lower elevation means it can still be warm in the afternoons, especially if the sun is out. If you’re after a chillier break, Kharsali’s cooler air and misty mornings will make the short stay feel more refreshing.

Kharsali’s higher altitude means mornings can stay misty and cooler into October, while Dehradun’s lower slopes often see daytime highs in the mid 20s Celsius. If you want a chillier vibe, stay near a place like Prakriti The Retreat in Harsil, where the temperature is usually a few degrees lower than in the plains.

Since Kharsali is higher than Dehradun, you’ll likely see cooler mornings and a steadier mist that lingers into the afternoon. If you want that chill factor on a short October stay, staying near Prakriti The Retreat in Harsil gives you a few degrees lower temps and a quieter setting compared to the busier Dehradun area. Does that sound like the vibe you’re after?

Kharsali is about 140 km from Dehradun, so you’ll still get a quick drive between the two. The higher altitude of Kharsali means mornings stay crisp, but if you want an even cooler spot for a couple of days, staying at Prakriti The Retreat in Harsil, roughly 32 km from Kharsali, will give you a few degrees lower temperatures and a quieter setting.
