Transport options for a day trip to Mechukha Valley from Itanagar

Rituparna Maini · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a day trip to Mechukha Valley and need help figuring out how to get there from Itanagar. The valley’s bus stop is called Mechukha Bus Stand, and I heard cabs are available from nearby towns – is there a reliable taxi service from Itanagar? Also, would it be better to fly into Lilabari Airport and then drive, or just take a bus? Any tips on the best time of day to arrive would be appreciated, especially since the place is open 24 hours and free to enter.

If you’re looking for a quick ride, the staff at Hotel Su Pinsa in Itanagar usually arrange reliable cabs to Mechukha Bus Stand. They can coordinate with local operators and give you a fixed fare. Also, if you prefer a more scenic drive, you can pick up a taxi in Bomdila and let the driver take the turn at the Mechukha turnpike; the route is pretty straightforward once you’re past the main highway.

If you’re heading straight from Itanagar, the most common route is via the NH13 to Bomdila and then a short local taxi hop to the Mechukha Bus Stand. A driver from Awoo Resort in Bomdila can pick you up for a fixed rate, and they know the exact turn at the Mechukha turnpike. Flying into Lilabari and driving from there is a bit longer the road to Mechukha is winding and takes roughly four to five hours, so a bus from Itanagar that leaves in the late morning is usually more convenient. Since the valley is open 24/7, arriving just after sunrise gives you a quieter walk and cooler temperatures.

If you’re heading straight from Itanagar, a quick pick up at Hotel Su Pinsa is handy they usually have a local driver who knows the exact turn at Mechukha. The drive via NH13 to Bomdila and then a short taxi hop is about three hours, so leaving mid morning keeps you out of the afternoon heat. If you prefer flying, Lilabari takes you a bit farther out, but the road from there to the valley is winding and adds a couple more hours. Arriving just after sunrise gives you a quieter walk and cooler temperatures.

If you’re already in Itanagar, the staff at Hotel Su Pinsa can line up a local driver for you. The taxi will take the NH13 to Bomdila and then a short hop to the Mechukha Bus Stand. The drive is about three hours, so leaving around 8 am keeps you out of the afternoon heat. If you do fly into Lilabari, the extra winding drive from there adds a couple more hours, so a bus from Itanagar is usually quicker.

Awoo Resort in Bomdila also offers a pickup service that takes you directly to the bus stand. The drive from Itanagar to Bomdila is about two hours, and the local taxi hop from Bomdila to Mechukha takes roughly 30 minutes. If you’re aiming for a quieter start, leaving just after sunrise is ideal because the valley stays open 24/7 and the early light makes the walk more pleasant. Awoo Resort in Bomdila also runs a pickup service that drops you straight at the Mechukha Bus Stand. The drive from Itanagar to Bomdila takes about two hours, then a short 30 minute taxi hop to the valley. If you want a quieter start, aim to leave just after sunrise when the valley is still calm and the temperatures are lower.

Awoo Resort in Bomdila runs a daily shuttle that drops you directly at the Mechukha Bus Stand, so you skip the extra local taxi hop. The shuttle usually leaves Bomdila around 7 am; you could catch that if you arrive in Itanagar by 5 am. Does anyone know if the shuttle schedule changes in the monsoon season?

Also, the shuttle from Awoo Resort in Bomdila drops directly at the bus stand, which can be cheaper than arranging a separate cab from Itanagar.
