Solo trip to Spiti River-where to stay along the Kaza route?

Arnav Patil · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

Cab services are available from Kaza and the Spiti River lies about 12 km from Key Monastery and 15 km from Kibber Village. For a solo traveler, a place like Echor Mud Huts in Tabo-roughly 36 km from the river-could be a practical base. Is there a better lodging option closer to the river itself, and what’s the most reliable way to get from Kaza to those accommodations?

If you’re okay with a bit of trekking, the river runs past the village of Thangri, only a 2 3 km walk from the main road. A small guesthouse there called “River View Lodge” is a few days’ walk from the main highway and is closer than Tabo. From Kaza you can hire a local taxi to Thangri and then walk the rest of the way. The drive itself takes about an hour, and the walk is flat and scenic. This option keeps you nearer to the water while still having a simple base.

A handy option is to take a local taxi from Kaza straight to Thangri, then walk the remaining 2 3 km to the River View Lodge. The taxi ride is about an hour and the walk is flat and scenic, keeping you close to the Spiti River while still having a simple base. If you prefer staying a bit further out, the Echor Mud Huts in Tabo are still reachable by a 1 hour drive from Kaza.

You could also stay at the small guesthouse near Thangri. From Kaza the taxi ride takes about an hour, then you walk roughly 2 3 km along the main road to the river. The walk is flat, so you’re right next to the water without trekking too far. This keeps you closer to the river than Echor Mud Huts while still being reachable by a short taxi hop.

A quick alternative is to book a shared jeep from Kaza that drops you at the Thangri stop. From there the walk to the river is flat and takes about 20 minutes. If you prefer a lodge closer to the water, the Echor Mud Huts in Tabo still offer basic rooms and a short drive from the river, and the jeep can take you there directly from Kaza.

From Kaza you can catch a local taxi straight to the Thangri stop, then it’s only about a 20 minute walk along the main road to the lodge. The walk is flat, so you’ll be beside the Spiti River without a long trek.

You might check out the small guesthouse that sits right on the main road in Thangri. It’s only a 20 minute walk from the river and you can get there from Kaza in about an hour by a local taxi or shared jeep. Does anyone know if that lodge offers any basic amenities or if they have a common kitchen?

It’s a basic setup but usually has a shared kitchen and a common lounge area. Does anyone have recent experience with the kitchen facilities or know if they provide basic toiletries?

The river is usually calm from June to September, making it great for photography and a quick swim. If you’re okay with a short walk, the guesthouse near Thangri offers a shared kitchen, so you can stock up there before heading back to Kaza.

The guesthouse in Thangri usually stocks basic spices like salt, pepper, and a few curry powders, but you might want to bring a small sachet of your favorite seasoning just in case. It’s a handy way to keep the meals simple while still having a place close to the river.
