Route to Umiam Lake & Shillong Peak after Sleng Falls

Ranganath Singh · 1 month ago ·22 replies

Sleng Falls sits near Shillong and has been a sacred spot for the Khasi tribes. After seeing the waterfall, I’d love to hit a few nearby places – Umiam Lake and Shillong Peak are only 15‑20 km away. What’s the most convenient way to travel between these spots, and do you think the route offers any historical insights? Also, are there any other historic sites worth a quick stop on the way?

If you’re driving from Shillong to Umiam Lake the most straightforward route is the NH6 corridor; it takes about 45 minutes and passes the historic Shillong Peak viewpoint where you can see the old colonial era watchtower. On the way you might also detour to the Shillong City Museum, which houses artifacts from the Khasi tribes and dates back to the British period. If you need a place to stay in Shillong, Living Roof offers good comfort and easy access to the highway.

A quick detour to the Shillong War Memorial on the way to Umiam Lake adds a layer of history. It commemorates the local soldiers from the World War II era and sits just off the NH6. If you’re staying in Shillong, the Living Roof hotel is a convenient spot to rest before heading out. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could also stop at the Shillong War Memorial on NH6 before reaching Umiam Lake; it’s a small site that tells the story of local soldiers in World War II. If you’re staying in Shillong, the Living Roof is a convenient base, close to the highway and the war memorial.

If you’re heading from Shillong to Umiam, stop at Shillong Peak first the old colonial watchtower there gives a quick glimpse of the 19th century military layout. After that, a quick walk to the Shillong War Memorial on NH6 adds a WWII layer. Do you think the watchtower’s view changes much between morning and afternoon?

If you’re driving, the NH6 is the fastest link from Shillong to Umiam Lake, but you could add a quick stop at the Shillong War Memorial right off the highway for a WWII snapshot. From there, a short detour to the old colonial watchtower at Shillong Peak gives a 19th century military angle. After the lake, a quick drive to the nearby Dholai Village can offer a glimpse of traditional Khasi architecture. If you need a place to rest in Shillong, Living Roof is close to the highway.

After Shillong Peak, a quick stop at Dholai Village is worth it it shows traditional Khasi architecture and some old colonial structures. The drive from there to Umiam Lake is still under an hour on NH6, so you’ll get both the scenic lake and a touch of local history in one go. If you need a base in Shillong, Living Roof is close to the highway.

If you’re heading from Shillong to Umiam Lake, you could detour to the Shillong War Memorial first just off NH6. After that, the old colonial watchtower at Shillong Peak offers a quick 19th century military view. From the peak, a short drive brings you to the traditional Khasi houses in Dholai Village. It’s a quick, historically rich loop before the lake.

If you’re heading north from Shillong to Umiam, the NH6 is the quickest, but a quick detour to the Shillong War Memorial right off the highway gives a solid WWII snapshot. After the lake, a short drive to Dholai Village shows traditional Khasi houses and a few colonial structures that you won’t see elsewhere. If you need a base in Shillong, Living Roof is just a mile from the highway.

If you’re driving from Shillong to Umiam, the NH6 takes you straight past the old colonial watchtower at Shillong Peak, then a quick turn onto the side road for the Umiam Lake viewpoint right by the dam. The viewpoint offers a 360° view of the reservoir and the surrounding hills, which is great for photos before you head back. If you need a place to stay near the highway, Living Roof is only a few minutes away.
