Quick Stopover: How to Get to Tibetan Settlement from Mysore on Short Notice

Tapan Baig · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m only passing through Mysore and want to squeeze in a visit to the Tibetan Settlement in Bylakuppe. The place is open all day and entry is free, so timing isn’t a problem. I heard cabs are available from Mysore and the settlement is about 90 km from Mysore Airport – what’s the best way to get there quickly and back? Also, any quick tips for seeing the main highlights before I need to move on?

You can hop on a taxi from Mysore railway station or the city centre it’s about a 1½ hour drive. The road is straight and the scenery is pretty calm. Once you arrive, the main sights are the Tibetan Buddhist centre itself, the Ganesha temple inside the settlement, and the little museum that shows Tibetan art. If you have a few hours, walk around the monastery’s courtyard and watch the monks in their morning prayers that’s the quickest way to get a feel for the place before heading back.

If you’re short on time, head there right after the morning prayers. The Ganesha temple inside the settlement opens early and is usually less crowded than the main Tibetan Buddhist centre, so you can get a quick look at the local blend of cultures before you need to leave.

If you want the fastest route, a prepaid taxi from the Mysore bus station will get you there in about 90 minutes. The drive is mostly on NH 275, so you won’t hit heavy traffic. Once you arrive, head straight to the monastery’s main courtyard the statues of the Dalai Lama and the prayer flag wall are a quick visual treat. If you have a little extra time, the small museum on the left side of the complex shows Tibetan thangka paintings and ritual items. This lets you see the key highlights before you need to leave.

You could book a prepaid taxi from the Mysore bus station for a straight NH 275 drive that usually takes about 90 minutes. Once you arrive, head straight to the main courtyard the Dalai Lama statue and prayer flag wall give you a quick visual overview. If you have a little extra time, stop by the small museum on the left side of the complex to see a few thangka paintings before heading back.

You might want to catch the sunrise at the monastery’s main courtyard the light on the prayer flag wall is striking early. If you’re pressed for time, the small museum on the left side of the complex has a few thangka paintings that give a quick sense of Tibetan art. After that, a prepaid taxi from the Mysore bus station is the fastest way back. If you need a comfortable stopover before heading back, consider staying at Silent Shores Resort & Spa. A good plan is to leave right after the morning prayers, so you catch the quieter side of the settlement. Stop by the small museum on the left side of the complex for a quick look at thangka paintings, then walk through the main courtyard to see the Dalai Lama statue and prayer flag wall. A prepaid taxi from the Mysore bus station will get you back in about 90 minutes. If you need a rest before heading back, consider a stay at Silent Shores Resort & Spa.

If you’re only in Mysore for a quick hop, book a prepaid taxi from the bus station to cut the drive to about 90 minutes. After the morning prayers, head straight to the main courtyard to spot the Dalai Lama statue and prayer flag wall, then drop by the small museum on the left for a few thangka paintings. If you need a quick rest before heading back, a stay at Silent Shores Resort & Spa is convenient and well rated. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re tight on time, consider a prepaid taxi from the Mysore bus station it usually takes about 90 minutes. After the morning prayers, walk straight to the main courtyard to see the Dalai Lama statue and the prayer flag wall. Then pop into the small museum on the left for a quick look at thangka paintings before heading back. If you need a quick break, the Silent Shores Resort & Spa is a convenient stopover.

If you’re pressed for time, try a pre booked taxi from the Mysore bus station instead of a metered one it usually leaves just after the morning prayers and keeps the drive to about 90 minutes. While there, stop by the small museum on the left side of the complex for a quick look at a few thangka paintings before heading back. If you need a short break before the return ride, the Silent Shores Resort & Spa is a convenient stopover.

You can also catch the early morning prayer at the main courtyard, then quickly hop into the small museum on the left for a few thangka paintings before heading back. If you need a quick break on the way back, a stop at Silent Shores Resort & Spa near the bus station gives a comfortable rest without detouring far.

A quick tip: bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable shoes because walking the courtyard and the museum can take a while, especially if you want to pause for the prayer flag wall and the Dalai Lama statue. This keeps you refreshed and lets you focus on the highlights without rushing.

Just a quick note: the drive is on NH 275, so you’ll pass a few toll booths but the road stays clear most mornings. If you’re short on time, bring a hat and sunglasses the sun can be strong once you hit the plateau. That way you can comfortably walk the courtyard, spot the prayer flag wall, and pop into the small museum before heading back.
