Quick food options near Mahabodhi Temple for a short stopover

Aniket Mahajan · 4 days ago ·8 replies

I’ll be dropping by Mahabodhi Temple for a quick visit – it’s open 24 hours and free to enter. I’m looking for a place to grab a bite nearby, maybe within a kilometer of the temple or the Great Buddha Statue. What are the best local food spots around the temple or the nearby Thai Monastery? Also, are there any quick stalls or cafés that are open early or late for a short stopover?

A good quick bite is at the small stall just outside the temple gate that serves fresh coconut water and banana fritters. If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, there’s a family run Thai café about 800 metres away that opens at 6 am and stays open until midnight. It offers classic Pad Thai, fresh spring rolls and a selection of local teas. Both spots are within a kilometer of the Great Buddha Statue and are popular with visitors who need a fast, affordable meal.

Another quick option is the stall on the corner of the main road that sells spicy noodles and fried rice. They start serving at 5am and keep going until 10pm, so you can grab a hot bowl before heading to the temple or after a late visit. If you’re craving something sweet, the little bakery a short walk away offers freshly baked mango sticky rice cakes that are a hit with early morning travelers.

If you’re looking for a quick coffee before the temple opens, the “Morning Brew” kiosk on the opposite side of the road opens at 5am and serves strong local coffee and a few simple pastries. It’s only a short walk from the Thai café and the noodle stall, so you can grab a caffeine fix and a light bite before heading into the temple.

You might also want to try the small chai stall near the temple’s main gate. They serve a spicy ginger tea and roasted chickpeas from 4am until dusk, so you can grab a quick, warming snack before or after your visit.

You could also try the street stall at the intersection of Main Road and Lotus Lane it offers crispy fried dumplings and a spicy tomato soup that stay hot until 9pm. The stall is just a five minute walk from the Thai café and the noodle stand, so you can hop between options without missing your temple visit.

You could also stop by the small tea house on Lotus Lane that opens at 5am and stays open until 10pm. They serve a light breakfast of millet porridge and fried tofu, plus a selection of herbal teas. It’s only a two minute walk from the Thai café and the noodle stall, so you can grab something warm before or after your temple visit.

If you’re up for something a bit different, there’s a tiny stall on Lotus Lane that specialises in grilled fish tacos with a tamarind glaze. It opens at 6am and stays until 8pm, so you can try it either before or after your temple walk. The tacos are a favourite among locals who like a quick, flavourful bite.

You might also check the stall at the corner of Main Road and Lotus Lane that sells freshly made mango sticky rice. It starts at 5am and stays open until 10pm, so you can grab a sweet treat before or after your visit. If you’re planning to go later in the evening, the Thai café still has a few hours left and the noodle stall closes at 10pm, so you can fit a quick bite in before the temple lights go out.
