Planning a visit to Modhera Sun Temple – best time and transport?

I’m looking to visit the Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat. The temple is open all day and free to enter, and I’ve heard the sunrise on the equinoxes is special. When is the best time to catch that sunrise, and how do I get there from Ahmedabad?

The equinoxes fall around March 20 21 and September 22 23, so the sun rises just before those dates. Arrive about 30 minutes early to catch the light hitting the stone façade. From Ahmedabad, drive east on NH 27 for roughly 1½ hours.
