Planning a Day Trip to Khurda Fort – Need Route and Timing Advice

Tanvi Ahluwalia · 1 month ago ·20 replies

Hey everyone! I’m planning a quick historical outing to Khurda Fort next month. I know it’s open all day and the best time to visit is from October to February, but I’m a bit unsure about the logistics. I’m staying in Bhubaneswar and would like to cover a few nearby sites like the Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa and Lingaraj Temple as well. What’s the most efficient way to arrange a day‑trip covering these spots? Should I start early from Bhubaneswar or from Khurda itself? Any tips on local transport, best time to visit each place, and how to avoid crowds would be really appreciated. Thanks!

A good plan is to leave Bhubaneswar around 6 am. First stop at Dhauli Giri; it’s less crowded before sunrise. Then head to Lingaraj Temple, which tends to fill up by mid - morning, so aim for 10 am there. Finally reach Khurda Fort around noon when it’s calmer. You can hop on a local bus or take a shared auto from the main bus stand - they run every 15 - 20 minutes and are cheaper than a private hire. Keep a bottle of water and a light snack, and you’ll have a smooth, packed day without too many crowds.

You could head out from Bhubaneswar around 5 am to beat the heat and crowds. Take a shared auto to Dhauli first, then hop on a local bus to Lingaraj, and finish at Khurda Fort by noon. The auto runs every 15 20 minutes from the main bus stand and is cheaper than a private hire. If you prefer a comfortable stay nearby, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only about 16 km away. A good tweak is to start a bit later, around 7 am, so you miss the midday rush at Lingaraj. Take a shared auto from the main bus stand to Dhauli, then a local bus to the temple. From there you can walk or catch a short auto ride to Khurda Fort. If you need a place to stay nearby, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only about 16 km from Bhubaneswar and easy to reach from the main bus stand.

If you’re okay with a little extra walking, you can skip the shared auto after Dhauli and walk to Lingaraj. The route is about 3 km and you’ll avoid the bus crowd. From Lingaraj, a quick auto hop of 10 minutes takes you straight to Khurda Fort, letting you finish the day before the afternoon rush. This keeps travel time low and gives you a quieter experience.

If you’re already at the main bus stand, you can hop on the 7 am shared auto to Dhauli. From there, the local bus to Lingaraj runs every 20 minutes, so you’ll arrive around 10 am when the crowds are lighter. After a quick walk or short auto hop to Khurda Fort, you’ll be there by noon. If you need a place to stay nearby, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only about 16 km from Bhubaneswar and easy to reach from the bus stand.

You could also grab a local taxi from the main bus stand straight to Dhauli, then walk the 3 km to Lingaraj. The walk takes about 45 minutes and keeps you away from the bus crowd. From Lingaraj, a short auto hop of ten minutes lands you right at Khurda Fort before the afternoon rush. If you need a place to rest, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is just 16 km away and easy to reach from the bus stand. Does this route fit your schedule?

You might try leaving a bit earlier, around 5:30 am, so you hit Dhauli before the crowds and then catch the 7 am shared auto to Lingaraj. From there a quick auto hop of about ten minutes lands you at Khurda Fort by noon. If you need a place to rest after the day, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only 16 km away and easy to reach from the main bus stand. Does that timing fit your plans?

If you can get a local bus that departs the Bhubaneswar bus stand around 5:30 am, you’ll reach Dhauli by 6:30. From there a quick auto hop of 10 15 minutes gets you to Lingaraj just before the main morning crowd. Finish at Khurda Fort by noon, then you can head back or stay at Hotel O Sunshine 2 for a relaxed evening.

Khurda Fort is about 16 km from Bhubaneswar, so if you start from the city you’ll hit it around noon. Parking is free near the gate, and the fort opens at 9 am, so you’ll avoid the early morning rush at Dhauli.

You might want to note that parking is free near the Khurda Fort entrance, so you can leave the car there and walk to the gate. This keeps you out of the traffic and lets you arrive a bit earlier than the noon crowd. If you need a place to stay after the day, Hotel O Sunshine 2 is only about 16 km away.
