Planning a 5‑Day Itinerary from Ukhimath to Kedarnath and Nearby Temples

Swarup Noronha · 2 weeks ago ·18 replies

I’m planning my first visit to Ukhimath and want a 5‑day route that covers Kedarnath (40 km away), Madhyamaheshwar (45 km), Tungnath (30 km) and the scenic Chopta area (25 km). Since Ukhimath is open all day and is the winter seat of Kedarnath, I’d like to know how to sequence the visits so I don’t miss any temple or the valley view. Could someone suggest a realistic daily plan that includes travel times, best days for each temple, and how to get from one spot to the next? Also, what are the most convenient accommodation options in Ukhimath for a first‑time traveller?

A good rhythm is to start at Ukhimath, visit Kedarnath first, then head to Madhyamaheshwar the next day, and finish with Tungnath and Chopta in the final two days. The drive from Ukhimath to Kedarnath takes about 1.5 hrs, so you can hit the temple early and return before sunset. From Kedarnath to Madhyamaheshwar is another 1.5 hrs; plan to stay overnight near the temple and catch the early light. On day four, drive 30 km to Tungnath, the highest Shiva shrine, then spend the afternoon in Chopta, which is only 25 km away and offers great valley views. For lodging in Ukhimath, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath is a convenient choice, close to the main gate and with good amenities for first time visitors. You could start day one by heading straight to Kedarnath in the morning, then back to Ukhimath for lunch. On day two, drive to Madhyamaheshwar early, stay overnight near the temple, and return to Ukhimath by sunset. Day three: go to Tungnath first, then head to Chopta for the afternoon valley views, and return. For staying in Ukhimath, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath offers convenient access to the main gate. You could do Day 1: head straight to Kedarnath early, return to Ukhimath by sunset. Day 2: drive to Madhyamaheshwar, stay overnight near the temple, and come back for a relaxed evening. On Day 3, start with Tungnath in the morning, then spend the afternoon in Chopta for the valley view. Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath is a good base and close to the main gate.

A good tweak is to hit Tungnath early, around sunrise, to beat the crowds and catch the light on the highest Shiva shrine. That leaves the afternoon free for Chopta’s valley trek. If you’re staying near the main gate, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath keeps you close to the road and the temple.

You might try: Day 1 head to Kedarnath early, back to Ukhimath by dusk. Day 2 go to Madhyamaheshwar, stay overnight near the temple, return later. Day 3 start at Tungnath at sunrise, then drive to Chopta for the valley walk, and finish back in Ukhimath. For a base that’s close to the main gate, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath offers easy access to the temple and good amenities. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you want a bit more rest after the long drives, consider staying at the Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath for the first two nights. It’s close to the main gate and has good amenities for first time visitors. The drive from Kedarnath to Madhyamaheshwar is about 45 minutes, so you can still hit the sunrise at Tungnath on day three without rushing. A quick tip: the valley walk from Chopta to Tungnath takes roughly 2 hours, so plan to leave Chopta around 1 pm to catch the sunset views.

You might want to leave Kedarnath early on day one so you can hit the sunrise at Madhyamaheshwar before the afternoon traffic climbs. From Madhyamaheshwar the drive to Tungnath is only about 30 km and takes roughly an hour, so you can reach the shrine by mid morning and still have plenty of daylight for the Chopta trek. A short 25 km drive from Tungnath to Chopta takes about 45 minutes, giving you an easy return to Ukhimath before dark. Sticking with Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath keeps you close to the main gate and the road, which is handy for those early morning starts.

A tip for day three: instead of driving straight from Tungnath to Chopta, you can take a local bus or taxi from the base village to the trailhead. The 2 hour trek to Tungnath leaves plenty of daylight for a relaxed walk back to Chopta, where the valley panorama is best after a late morning hike. If you’re staying in Ukhimath, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath keeps the main gate and the road within a mile, so you can hit the temples early without a long commute.

You might want to use the local jeep service that runs from Ukhimath to Tungnath and Chopta. It departs roughly every 90 minutes and drops you at the base of the trail, cutting the drive time by about 30 minutes. This way you can reach Tungnath before noon and still have ample daylight for the valley walk from Chopta. If you need a place to stay in Ukhimath, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath is a convenient base right by the main gate. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you have a spare morning on day 2, consider taking a local bus from Ukhimath to the Chopta trailhead instead of driving the 25 km. The bus drops you right at the base, so you can start the valley walk earlier and still make it back to Ukhimath for dinner. Staying at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath keeps you within a kilometer of the main gate and the bus stop.

You could save a bit of time on Day 3 by taking the local jeep from Ukhimath to the Tungnath trailhead instead of driving the full 30 km. The jeep drops you right at the base, so you reach the shrine by mid morning and still have daylight for the valley walk from Chopta. This also keeps you within a short distance of the main gate for a quick return.

This lets you reach the shrine before noon and still have plenty of daylight for the valley walk from Chopta. For a convenient base near the main gate, Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath is a solid choice.

You might want to add a quick stop at the Ukhimath temple itself on day 1 before heading to Kedarnath; the morning light there is lovely and it gives you a gentle start. Also, if you stay at Regenta Resort Madhuganga Ukhimath, the hotel offers a shuttle that drops you near the base of the Tungnath trail, saving you a half hour drive on day 3.
