Planning a 4‑day family trip to New Tehri – what should we do?

Rajat Mann · 1 month ago ·20 replies

We’re planning a short family getaway to New Tehri and want a 4‑day itinerary that mixes sightseeing and some light adventure. The kids are excited about the Tehri Dam and a bit of boating on the reservoir. We also want to see the old town ruins and maybe a quick trip to Rishikesh. Any suggestions on the best sequence of activities and a place to stay nearby?

Start Day 1 by heading straight to the Tehri Dam for the kids’ first big sight. After lunch, spend the afternoon on a gentle boat ride on the reservoir most tours run from the dam’s jetty. On Day 2, drive to the old town ruins; the walk there takes about 30 minutes and the kids can explore the ancient temples. Day 3 can be a quick day trip to Rishikesh the trek from Tehri takes about two hours, and you’ll return in time for dinner. Finish Day 4 by relaxing at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti, which sits just a few kilometres from the dam and offers easy access to all the sites.

If you’re staying at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti, you can grab breakfast there and then head straight to the dam. The jetty is only a short walk from the hotel, so the kids can jump on a paddle boat right after lunch. On day two, consider stopping at the old town ruins on the way back there’s a small café near the ruins where you can grab a quick snack before heading to Rishikesh. The drive to Rishikesh takes about two hours from Tehri, so you’ll still have time to return to the hotel for a relaxed evening.

If you’re staying at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti, you can start Day 1 with a quick walk to the dam’s visitor center there’s a small café right by the jetty where the kids can grab a snack before heading out on the paddle boat. For Day 3, instead of a full trek to Rishikesh, consider a short drive to the nearby Shivpuri temple; it’s a quick 30 minute ride and still gives the family a taste of local culture without the long trek.

You could swap Day 2 and Day 3: visit the old town ruins first thing after the dam, then head to Rishikesh the same afternoon. That way the kids get a quick cultural stop before the longer trek. Staying at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti keeps you a short walk from the dam and gives easy access to the jetty and the ruins.

If you’re staying at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti, you can walk to the dam’s visitor centre in under ten minutes. The jetty has a small café where the kids can grab a quick bite before the paddle boat ride. After the dam, heading straight to the old town ruins saves a half hour of back tracking, and you’ll have plenty of daylight for the quick trek to Rishikesh on Day 3.

You could also consider a quick visit to the Shivpuri temple on Day 2 instead of the old town ruins. It’s only a 30 minute ride from the dam and offers a quieter spot for the kids to explore local architecture before the longer trek to Rishikesh. Staying at Hotel Le ROI Lake View Koti keeps you close to both the jetty and the temple, so you can hop on and off without extra travel time.

You could also stop by the small local market near the dam on Day 1 after the boat ride. The stalls sell fresh fruit and hand made crafts, giving the kids a quick cultural taste before heading to the old town ruins the next day. This keeps the travel time short and lets the family stretch their legs between the main sights.
