Planning a 2-Day Trip to Halebidu – Any Tips on Itinerary and Timing?

Jatin Shukla · 1 month ago ·21 replies

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a quick 2‑day visit to Halebidu and want to make the most of the Hoysaleswara Temple, which I’ve read is open 24 hours and has free entry. I’ve heard it’s best to visit from October to December, so I’m thinking of traveling in early November.

I’ll be arriving by bus at the Halebidu Bus Stand and possibly staying in the nearby town. Apart from the temple, I’d love to see a few of the nearby attractions (like the Halebidu Archaeological Museum or Belur Chennakeshava Temple) and maybe catch a sunset somewhere nearby.

What would a good day‑by‑day plan look like? Any advice on the best times to visit the temple, how long to stay, and how to fit in the other sites without rushing? Also, any tips on local transport or small eateries near the temple would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Arrive early, around 6 am, to beat the crowds at Hoysaleswara. Spend two hours exploring the temple and its carvings. Then head to the Halebidu Archaeological Museum for an hour. In the afternoon, take a short auto to Belur Chennakeshava Temple; spend about 90 minutes there. For sunset, find a spot overlooking the Kaveri River or the temple courtyard. Local auto rickshaws run between the sites, and a few dhabas near the temple offer simple, fresh meals like dosa and filter coffee.

If you’re staying in Belur, the Sunshine International Boarding & Lodging is a short drive from the Halebidu bus stand and gives easy access to the temple. After your early morning visit to Hoysaleswara, head to the Halebidu Archaeological Museum, then take a quick auto to Belur Chennakeshava Temple. For sunset, the temple courtyard offers a good view of the Kaveri River just before it meets the town. A local dhaba near the temple serves simple dosa and filter coffee that’s popular with visitors.

If you want a quieter sunset spot, head to the small hill just south of the temple where the Kaveri bends. The view of the river and the temple silhouette in the evening is lovely. You can grab a quick snack from the dhaba near the temple entrance before heading back to the bus stand.

You could stay at Sunshine International Boarding & Lodging in Belur; it’s only a short auto ride from the Halebidu bus stand. Arrive at the temple right after sunrise the light on the carvings is best then. After about two hours, head to the Archaeological Museum, then take a quick auto to the Belur Chennakeshava Temple. Finish the day with sunset from the hill south of Hoysaleswara, where the Kaveri bends; the view of the temple silhouette is lovely.

A quick way to get to Belur from the Halebidu bus stand is a local auto rickshaw; the ride takes about ten minutes and costs a few rupees. Once you’re at Belur, you can hop on a shared auto to the Chennakeshava Temple, which is only about five kilometres away. This keeps the travel time short so you still have plenty of daylight for the museum and a sunset spot near the Kaveri bend.

You could also visit the small nearby shrine of Shantadurga at the foot of the hill just south of Hoysaleswara; it’s a quiet spot that many skip. If you’re staying in Belur, the Sunshine International Boarding & Lodging is only a short auto away from the bus stand, making it easy to return after sunset. A quick dhaba near the temple entrance serves fresh idlis that pair well with the late afternoon tea you’ll enjoy.

You could try the small dhaba just outside the Hoysaleswara entrance they serve a spicy masala dosa with coconut chutney that pairs well with the late afternoon filter coffee. The Halebidu Archaeological Museum opens at 10 a.m., so you can fit a quick visit right after the temple before heading to Belur. A short auto ride takes about ten minutes, keeping the schedule relaxed.

From there, a quick auto ride to Belur’s Chennakeshava Temple takes about ten minutes, giving you plenty of time to see the temple before the afternoon crowds. For sunset, the small hill just south of Hoysaleswara, where the Kaveri bends, offers a quiet spot to watch the river and temple silhouette. You might want to note that the Hoysaleswara Temple is only about two and a half kilometres from the Halebidu bus stand, so a short walk or a quick auto ride gets you there in under ten minutes. That way you can still hit the museum after the temple and keep the afternoon free for Belur without rushing.

It might be worth stopping at the tiny Shantadurga shrine just below the hill south of Hoysaleswara it’s quiet and often missed, and you can grab a quick cup of filter coffee there before heading back to the bus stand. Also, bring a bottle of water and some sunblock; the early November heat can still be brisk, especially when you’re walking between the temple, museum and Belur.

The museum’s collection includes a good display of Hoysala pottery and bronze sculptures that give a nice contrast to the temple carvings. It’s worth setting aside a bit more time there if you’re interested in the art history side of things.
