Late afternoon plans at Anamudi Shola National Park

Dhruv Patel · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’ll be arriving at Anamudi Shola National Park around 4 pm. The park stays open all day and entry is free, so I’m hoping to make the most of the late hours. What activities or sights are still worth exploring after the sun sets? I’d also like to know if it’s feasible to walk to the nearby Pothamedu View Point (5 km) or Eravikulam National Park (10 km) in that timeframe.

You can still enjoy the misty mornings and the quiet forest trails after sunset. A short walk to the nearest viewpoint, like the Pothamedu View Point, is doable in a few hours the trail is about 5 km and takes roughly an hour each way on a decent day. The Eravikulam National Park is a bit farther; a 10 km trek would probably push you past dark and would be better left for daylight. If you want to stay in the area overnight, consider staying at a local resort such as Chandys Drizzle Drops, which is only about 8.7 km away.

After dark the forest really quiets down and the mist rises higher. A good spot is the viewpoint near the park’s main gate you can spot the silhouettes of the trees and sometimes a few deer that come out after sunset. If you have a flashlight you can do a short loop around the trail, it takes about 30 minutes and the path is still visible. If you want to stay in the area overnight, Chandys Drizzle Drops is a five minute walk from the park and has a good breakfast the next day.

After sunset the forest lights up with bioluminescent fungi in some spots a quick 30 minute walk from the main gate will let you spot a few glowing patches. If you want a quiet spot, the viewpoint near the park’s entrance is still visible with a headlamp, and you can linger to hear night birds. For a comfortable overnight stay, Chandys Drizzle Drops is just under nine kilometres away and offers a good breakfast the next day. You could also try a short night time walk along the main trail near the park gate. A 30 minute loop is still visible with a headlamp and you’ll hear the night birds that start singing after dusk. If you’re staying overnight, Chandys Drizzle Drops is only about nine kilometres away and offers a good breakfast the next day.

A good idea is to stay a bit longer at the park and then head to the main gate viewpoint. From there you can do a short loop that takes about 30 minutes and still has enough light for a headlamp. If you want a place to stay the next night, Chandys Drizzle Drops is just under nine kilometres away and offers a nice breakfast. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could finish the evening with a short walk from the main gate to the viewpoint right beside the park. It’s only a 15 minute loop and the path stays lit enough with a headlamp. If you want to stay over, Chandys Drizzle Drops is about 8.7 km away and offers a good breakfast the next morning.

If you’re staying after sunset, a quick loop around the main gate to the Pothamedu View Point is still doable. The trail is about 5 km round trip and usually takes an hour each way, so you’ll finish before it gets too dark. For a place to crash the next night, Chandys Drizzle Drops is just under 9 km away and offers a good breakfast the following day.

You can also pause at the small tea estate terraces that line the trail; they look almost silver in the moonlight and you might catch a glimpse of a nocturnal owl. If you have a headlamp, a 30 minute loop around the main gate will let you hear the forest’s night chorus before heading back.
