Late afternoon arrival in Nako: Where should I stay?

Pranav Mukherjee · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’ll be reaching Nako around 4 p.m. and want to find a place to stay nearby. The village is 52 km from Kalpa and about 60 km from Sangla, both of which have hotels with good reviews. Hotel Kalpa Deshang in Kalpa is rated 8.6 and has plenty of local amenities, while Zostel Sangla in Sangla has a higher rating of 8.9 and a more hostel‑style vibe. Should I book a stay in Kalpa for easier access to the monastery or in Sangla for a quieter, more budget‑friendly option?

If you’re mainly planning to visit the Nako Monastery, staying at Hotel Kalpa Deshang in Kalpa puts you closer to the road that leads directly to the temple. The drive from Kalpa to Nako is only about 30 km and the road is well maintained, so you’ll get there earlier in the day. If you prefer a quieter, more budget friendly stay and don’t mind a longer drive, Zostel Sangla is a solid choice. The hostel is popular for its social vibe and clean dorms, and the 60 km trek from Sangla to Nako is fairly flat, which can be a nice walk if you’re up for it.

If you’re looking for the quickest way to reach Nako Monastery, staying at Hotel Kalpa Deshang puts you on the main highway that runs directly toward the temple, so you’ll have a smoother drive to the village. If you prefer a quieter, budget friendly base and don’t mind a longer trek, Zostel Sangla’s hostel vibe and higher rating of 8.9 could be more appealing. Have you checked the local transport options from either town to Nako?

If you’re only after a quick hop to Nako Monastery, staying at Hotel Kalpa Deshang gives you a direct stretch of highway and a smooth 30 km drive. If you’d rather stretch the budget and enjoy a quieter vibe, Zostel Sangla’s hostel is cheaper and the 60 km trek from Sangla to Nako is mostly flat, making it a decent walk. Have you looked into local taxi or shared ride options from either town?

If you’re okay with a longer trek, you could also consider staying at Hotel Kalpa instead of the hostel. It’s a little cheaper than the Kalpa Deshang and still gives you easy road access to the Nako route, so you won’t miss out on the monastery while keeping costs down.

If you want to get to Nako Monastery early, the 30 km stretch from Kalpa is a smooth, well maintained road. From Kalpa you can catch a local taxi that drops you near the monastery entrance, so you’ll have a few hours to explore before evening. If you prefer a quieter night, you could still stay in Kalpa and walk the 30 km drive instead of trekking.

If you want to hit the monastery before sunset, you can book a local taxi from Kalpa that drops you right at the Nako entrance. That way you’ll spend less time on the 30 km drive and have a few extra hours to explore the temple grounds.

If you’re aiming for a quick visit to Nako Monastery, staying at Hotel Kalpa Deshang gives you a direct 30 km drive and easy taxi drop off near the temple. On the other hand, Zostel Sangla offers a quieter, budget friendly vibe and you could walk the flat 60 km route if you enjoy a longer trek. Which factor matters more to you?

Kalpa’s Hotel Kalpa Deshang has a small tea shop on the same street, so you can grab a quick cup before heading out, which is handy if you arrive late in the afternoon.

If you’re hoping to catch the Nako Monastery before sunset, you might want to check if a local taxi from Kalpa can drop you at the temple’s entrance around 6 pm. That way you still get the convenience of Hotel Kalpa Deshang’s road access without staying too far from the village.

A quick tip: if you stay at Hotel Kalpa Deshang you can usually catch a local taxi that drops you right at the Nako Monastery entrance around 6 pm, so you’ll have a few extra hours to explore before sunset. This saves you a half hour drive and lets you enjoy the temple’s evening ambience.

If you’re hoping to beat the sunset crowd at Nako, consider a quick taxi from Hotel Kalpa Deshang to the monastery’s entrance; the drop off point is only a few minutes from the gate. That way you can spend the evening exploring the temple without a long drive. If you’d rather stretch your budget, Zostel Sangla’s hostel is cheaper but you’d walk or bike the 60 km flat route. Which timing works best for you?

You could also consider staying at Hotel Kalpa instead of Kalpa Deshang. It’s a bit cheaper but still on the same road, so you won’t miss the easy 30 km drive to Nako. The only trade off is a slightly less upscale experience. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.
