Is staying near Chennai Lighthouse cheaper than staying near Marina Beach for a couple?

Swarup Noronha · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m trying to plan a short trip in Chennai with my partner and want to keep costs low. Both the Chennai Lighthouse and Marina Beach are popular spots and are only about a kilometre apart, but I’m not sure which side would be cheaper for accommodation. The lighthouse itself is free to visit and open all day, so that saves a ticket fee. Are there budget hotels or guesthouses closer to the lighthouse that would cut down on travel time and money compared to staying near Marina Beach?

If you’re looking for a budget option close to the lighthouse, the E Hotel sits just under 2.8 km away and offers decent rates for a short stay. It’s a quick walk from the lighthouse area and you won’t have to pay a ticket fee at all. The walk to Marina Beach from there is only a few minutes, so you still get easy access to both spots without extra transport costs.

If you’re looking for a cheap option closer to the lighthouse, the E Hotel is a solid pick. It’s about 2.8 km away, so you’ll still walk a short distance to the lighthouse and to Marina Beach. The rates are lower than the more upscale hotels, and you avoid extra transport costs. It’s a good middle ground if you want to stay near both spots.

If you want to cut the walk to the lighthouse even further, the E Hotel is only about 2.8 km away and the local auto rickshaws run short trips for a few rupees. Staying there keeps you close to the lighthouse and still a quick hop to Marina Beach, so you avoid extra bus fare or a long walk. It’s a solid budget option that doesn’t sacrifice convenience.

Taj Connemara is about 2.4 km from the lighthouse, so you’d still walk a short distance to both spots. It’s a bit pricier than the E Hotel but gives a quieter base if you’re looking for a bit more comfort while keeping travel time low. How do you feel about that trade off? If you’re okay with a bit more comfort for a slightly higher price, the Radisson Blu Hotel Chennai City Centre is only about 2.4 km from the lighthouse and still close to Marina Beach. The hotel offers a free shuttle that runs every 15 minutes to the beach, so you can skip a taxi and save a few rupees each day.

You might also consider staying near the S M Mansion. It’s a bit farther out at about 2.57 km from the lighthouse, but the area has a good mix of budget rooms and easy auto access. From there you can hop on a short bus to Marina Beach for a few rupees, keeping the overall travel cost lower than staying right on the beach side.

If you’re aiming to stay very close to the lighthouse, the E Hotel is about 2.8 km away and still within walking distance to Marina Beach. It’s cheaper than the upscale Taj options and you won’t need to pay a ticket fee for the lighthouse. Just a short auto ride gets you there in minutes, saving on both travel time and transport costs.

If you want to cut down on daily transport, staying near the lighthouse means you can hop on a short auto rickshaw to Marina Beach for just a few rupees, rather than a longer walk from the beach side. A budget option a bit closer is the E Hotel, which sits about 2.8 km from the lighthouse and still lets you walk to the beach in a few minutes. Do you think that small extra walk is worth the lower daily travel cost?

You might also look at the Radisson Blu Hotel Chennai City Centre. It’s only about 2.4 km from the lighthouse, so a short auto ride gets you there and the hotel’s free shuttle runs to Marina Beach every 15 minutes. That cuts both the walk and daily taxi fare, while still keeping you close to the lighthouse. Have you considered how the shuttle schedule fits with your visit times?

If you’re okay with a slightly longer walk but still want a budget stay, the S M Mansion is around 2.57 km from the lighthouse. It’s a three star hotel with decent reviews, and you can hop on an auto to Marina Beach for just a few rupees each day, keeping transport costs lower than staying right on the beach side.
