How to plan a 3‑day historic tour of Berinag and nearby sites?

Pooja Saikia · 1 month ago ·22 replies

I want to spend three days in Berinag and its surroundings, covering the Berinag Temple, the tea gardens, and other historically relevant spots like Chaukori and Munsiyari. The temple is said to have been built by the Pandavas during their exile, and the tea estates date back to the British era. Should I start early in the morning to avoid crowds and what transport options work best between Pithoragarh and these nearby places?

If you’re leaving from Pithoragarh, a hired 4WD or a local taxi works best for the steep roads to Berinag and Chaukori, especially in summer. For Munsiyari you can catch a shared jeep that stops at the tea gardens. Starting early does cut the crowds at the temple and gives you more time to stroll through the tea estates. If you need a place to stay, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar is a convenient option a short drive away.

You could also stay at The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar for a comfortable base. From there a shared jeep can drop you at the tea gardens early in the morning, and the same vehicle will take you to Chaukori and back to Pithoragarh. The early start keeps the temple crowd light and gives you extra time to explore the historic sites.

A shared jeep from Pithoragarh usually starts around 6 am and can drop you at the Berinag Temple, then the tea gardens, and back to Pithoragarh by late afternoon. The same vehicle often has a stop in Chaukori, so you can hop on there for a quick visit. If you want a comfortable base a bit farther out, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar is a good option and still within a short drive of those spots.

The shared jeep from Pithoragarh usually leaves around 5:30 am, which lets you beat the main crowd at the Berinag Temple and still get to the tea gardens before noon. From there the same jeep can take you to Chaukori in the late afternoon, and you’ll be back to Pithoragarh by dusk. If you need a place to stay that’s close to all these spots, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar is a convenient base. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

The tea gardens usually open around nine in the morning and close by five, so you’ll get a full day of strolling through the estates after the early temple visit. If you want a convenient base close to all the spots, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar is just a short drive away.

If you hit the temple around 8:30 a.m. you’ll dodge the larger crowds and still have time for a leisurely walk through the tea gardens before they close at five. After the gardens, a quick stop at Chaukori for its panoramic view is a great way to round out the day before heading back to Pithoragarh. The shared jeep that drops you at the temple usually stops at Chaukori, so you can hop on there without extra hassle.

A good tip is to reach Berinag Temple by sunrise the hilltop view is spectacular before the crowds arrive. After the temple, you can hop on the same shared jeep to the tea gardens, which open at nine and close by five, giving you a full afternoon stroll. If you need a base close to all spots, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar is a convenient option. What time would you prefer to leave Pithoragarh?

If you’re staying at The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar, you can ask the staff for a local guide to the tea gardens; they can arrange a short walk around the estate that starts at 9 am and ends by 5. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You might also consider stopping at the old British tea factory in Jageshwar; it’s a short detour from the main route and offers a quick glimpse of colonial tea processing. If you’re staying near the hills, The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar gives easy access to both the temple and the tea gardens and the staff can arrange a local guide for a deeper walk through the estates.

If you’re staying at The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar, ask the staff to arrange a short guided walk through the tea estate that starts around nine and lets you see the old British processing shed. That way you’ll get a deeper look without missing the temple crowd, and you can hop on the same shared jeep for Chaukori later in the afternoon.

You could add a quick stop at the old British tea factory in Jageshwar on your way back to Pithoragarh. It’s just off the main route and gives a neat glimpse of colonial tea processing. That way you still hit the temple early, enjoy the gardens, and finish the day with a quick historical detour.

A 4 WD gives you a bit more flexibility if you want to stop at the old British tea factory in Jageshwar, but the shared jeep that leaves Pithoragarh at 5:30 am will still get you to the temple, tea gardens and Chaukori before sunset. If you’re staying at The Green Village Eco Resort Jageshwar, you could ask the front desk to line up a guide for a quick walk through the estate that starts at 9 am and ends by 5 pm.

A quick note on Chaukori the ridge sits a few hundred metres above Berinag, so the sun is still low in the early afternoon. If you want the best light for photos, aim to be there around 2 p.m. instead of earlier, when the clouds can be thicker. This way you get a clear panoramic view of the valley without the crowds that start piling up by 3 p.m.

For Chaukori, try to be there around 2 p.m. when the sun is low and the view is clear, avoiding the heavier afternoon traffic.
